“Heavy Water (The Dead Sea)”

© 2013 Thousand Word Images by Dustin Abbott

The Dead Sea is perhaps the most unique body of water on earth. It represents the lowest point on the earth (over 1400 feet below sea level), and one of the highest levels on salinity on the planet. It is about 10 times more salty than the ocean, so most people don’t swim here…they float. This region is considered the world’s first spa, and people still flock here. The minerals mined from the lake are world famous. People also like coming here because it is so far below sea level that UV rays are dramatically reduced, making it perhaps the safest place to sunbathe on the planet. Even the mud is valuable. The water is frequently utterly calm like this, in part because the water is, well, heavy because of the extreme mineral content. A truly unique place! P.S. The mountains on the far side are the country of Jordan.
