“Blue is the Sky”

© 2014 Thousand Word Images by Dustin Abbott

I recently did a review on the filter system for my 14mm f/2.8 lens, but lamented that while I had been able to get an ND grad filter for it (very important!) I was struggling to find the solid ND filter through Ebay…or anywhere. I eventually solved the problem by making my own. I made the frame for it out of two heavy portrait mattes and then added some LEE ND film in between. It seems to the do the trick. This is a single exposure, and I’ve used the ND Grad to hold back the sky while adding the solid ND to give me a longer shutter length. I have done some dodging and burning along with a few targeted color saturation tweaks, but the images were seriously dynamic right out of camera. The great sky really makes the image for me!
