Low Ebb

It is this time of year that the water levels typically drop the lowest on the massive Ottawa River. You can see from the design of the jetty here that the water level can reach up to close to the level of the walkway above and this whole area where I was set up to shoot would be under water. Still, the exposed rocks at low ebb provide an interesting perspective. I’ve blended two long exposure shots here – one twenty second exposure for the foreground and blurred water, and I’ve blended in portions of a 2.5 second exposure to retain highlights in the sky while keeping the movement in the clouds. I chose the large rock in the foreground to anchor the composition. I plan to write an article soon for DPS (Digital Photography School) about the need for an anchor in landscape images.
