“A Touch of Frost”

© 2015 Thousand Word Images by Dustin Abbott

I’ve taken to carrying a small mirrorless (EOS M3 right now) with the opposite of my full frame kit when I go out shooting. If I have a wide angle setup on the full frame, I’ll pack a small telephoto on the mirrorless or vice-versa. That was the case here, and it enable me to visit this little lake touched by a morning frost with mist rising off the still somewhat warm water (it’s been very mild so far). The telephoto shot (160mm full frame equivalent) compressed the shoreline and brought the distant shore closer so that you can just make out the hint of the trees on the far shoreline. I love the uniquely wintry color palette here. Frost creates beautiful colors, and they are on display in this shot here.  It is extremely rare for us to have open water this time of year (particularly on a small lake), and I’m enjoying the extra opportunities to shoot the season’s transition.  We often jump quickly into winter, but this year we seem to be easing in, and it’s pretty nice!
