Meike 50mm F1.7 Review

Dustin Abbott

September 6th, 2018

Many of the lenses that I review tend to be quite expensive (photography is an expensive hobby for amateurs, and some lenses are priced either for working professionals like myself or those with a lot of disposable income).  Others of you have a passion for photography but a limited budget.  So, periodically, I like to review budget lenses for those that want to move beyond a kit lens and dip their toes in what a wide aperture prime can offer, and that’s where the Meike 50mm f/1.7 lens comes in.  Good luck getting a shot like this out of a kit lens:

The Meike 50mm f/1.7 is a budget prime lens available for Sony E-mount, but what sets it apart from many of the small, budget primes that I’ve used is that it is compatible with full frame as well as APS-C cameras.  I reviewed it primarily on a Sony a7R3 full frame camera with a 42 MP resolution.  It produced quite nice portrait images on a budget (you can get it for less than $125 USD).

The Meike 50mm f/1.7 is a beautifully built little lens, with all metal construction.  It has a manual aperture ring (clickless) and is manual focus only, though that is less of a burden on mirrorless cameras as it is on DSLRs.

While I don’t have time in my schedule to do a full text review, I have run the Meike 50mm f/1.7 through my typical battery of tests and have filmed a full video review, which you can view below.  You can also visit the image galleries below and see the photos I’ve taken with the lens.  There are links on where you can purchase one for yourself below as well.
