0:10
hi I'm Dustin Abbott and I'm here for a
0:12
different kind of review here today
0:14
today I'm taking a look at the motorized
0:16
blinds from the company smart wings now
0:19
over the years I've bought a wide range
0:20
of blinds for either the church that I
0:23
Pastor or for our home so I'm well
0:27
versed in having to choose appro at type
0:30
blinds for the application I'm also well
0:33
aware that they aren't cheap having
0:35
spent thousands of dollars on them in
0:37
the past however I needed a blind for
0:41
this office that I often also use as my
0:43
studio and a couple of primary factors
0:46
for that one is privacy I will do
0:48
counseling in this office or meetings
0:51
with people and so a lot of activity
0:52
going on outside the window can be
0:54
distractive and also make people feel
0:56
like they uh don't have the kind of
0:58
privacy that they're necessarily looking
0:59
looking for and then on a secondary
1:01
concern when it comes to filming in this
1:04
space I've worked to try to limit the
1:06
amount of echo in here and to improve
1:08
the sound quality but being able to
1:10
control the lighting through a blind and
1:13
particularly one in the style that I
1:15
have chosen here that gives me a wide
1:17
range of options over how much either
1:19
light I have coming through uh kind of
1:22
the translucent slat or of course the
1:24
option to open it all together so I uh
1:28
when smart Wings reached out to me to
1:30
see if I was interested in doing a
1:31
collaboration with them I said yes
1:34
because it both fit a need for me and
1:37
this particular application but also is
1:39
something that I was already considering
1:41
doing uh for the reasons that I've given
1:44
you already so today what I'm going to
1:46
try to do is to try to walk through the
1:48
process of of good and bad in this whole
1:51
journey and and so that you can maybe
1:53
have a sense of whether or not this is a
1:54
company that you could look to for your
1:56
own blinds in the future so first of all
2:00
give you a couple of the features to go
2:01
over obviously as noted these are
2:03
motorized blinds that I've chosen and
2:05
motorized is kind of their thing uh it's
2:07
not just about blinds themselves but
2:09
about having motorized and control
2:12
through a variety of means whether it be
2:14
a a dedicated remote control like this
2:16
but then also through some other options
2:19
if you're looking to use something like
2:22
Amazon Alexa or uh Google homekit
2:25
various applications to where if you're
2:27
wanting to integrate into kind of a
2:29
smart Home Solution they're definitely
2:31
designed around that one of the things
2:34
that I actually really liked about this
2:36
particular application as well is the
2:38
fact that they do have a solar charging
2:42
option and it's a small solar panel that
2:44
will go actually on the window in in
2:46
this case it's very easy to put it in a
2:48
place to where essentially you'll never
2:50
see or never notice it but obviously
2:52
it's going to be getting that available
2:53
window light coming through and keeping
2:55
it charging I think this is a really
2:57
great option if you happen to have a
2:59
very high an inaccessible window now in
3:01
this case my window is not overly High
3:04
however I certainly can't access the top
3:07
of it without uh having a ladder it's
3:09
something like 7 and 1/2 ft up and so uh
3:12
tall enough to where I do need a ladder
3:14
to access that space the other thing
3:16
that I found as I begin to explore their
3:18
options in terms of the style of Shades
3:21
that uh smart Wings does have a huge
3:23
range of options available a lot of
3:26
different applications and uh I actually
3:29
took me a while to kind of come up with
3:31
what I thought would work because they
3:32
had some wood style blinds that I
3:34
thought were cool because I do have some
3:36
wood Accents in this particular office
3:38
space but I ended up going with what I
3:41
what I chose for the reasons I'll give
3:43
you in just a moment the other kind of
3:45
uh kind of standout feature of smart
3:47
Wings is that all of their blinds do
3:49
include free shipping and that is to a
3:51
variety of company or countries I should
3:53
say and you'll be able to quickly
3:55
determine whether or not that applies to
3:57
your country because either they ship to
4:00
your country and you have free shipping
4:02
or they don't ship to your country and
4:04
it's just not even an option at this
4:06
point so let's talk about what I
4:08
particularly chose here in for this
4:10
space I decided to go with their
4:12
motorized zebra Shades and in the
4:14
translucent style I wasn't looking for a
4:16
complete blackout solution in fact I
4:19
wanted a solution to where at the most
4:22
um you know in the most kind of closed
4:24
down space it would be something like
4:26
this to where it's not blocking all of
4:28
the light still kind of giving a little
4:30
bit of a glow to the room but able to
4:32
provide privacy and then also to really
4:35
control the quantity of light that's
4:37
coming in and I really like the zebra
4:39
style because it does give you the
4:41
option of having privacy and light you
4:45
know if you just choose to go with these
4:46
slats there still is kind of a Shear in
4:49
there and so it's you can see in and out
4:52
but it's particularly from the outside
4:53
it's not easy to see in and so uh it's
4:56
it's a good option there obviously I
4:59
chose what is they call their Z-Wave
5:02
motor and so this motor is quite quiet
5:04
in operation um it's not as you can see
5:07
it's not like blindingly fast in terms
5:10
of going up and down but it's fast
5:12
enough and it's very quiet in operation
5:15
uh whenever I've had people in here that
5:16
wanted to see the the shade and I began
5:18
to operate it people have been duly
5:20
impressed and so if that's your goal to
5:22
show how kind of James Bond high-tech
5:25
you are with your blinds it'll probably
5:27
satisfy that as well I did choose to go
5:30
with this style remote because this is a
5:33
an office it's not um in like my home
5:36
for example where I'm so concerned with
5:38
more like Google Alexa type control but
5:41
just being able to control it this way
5:43
was more important to me I did choose
5:45
the solar panel and so I wouldn't have
5:47
to mess with getting up there to charge
5:49
it in and so uh then when it came to the
5:52
installation process uh it was
5:54
straightforward for the most part
5:56
however there was an error on my part
5:58
that I'll detail in just a moment where
6:01
initially I um I'm made an error in in
6:05
measuring all the spots that I should
6:07
have me uh measured and so the first
6:09
blind that arrived it was correctly made
6:11
but it didn't fit my space and so I had
6:13
to redo it and and so we'll get to that
6:16
in just a moment but outside of that the
6:18
installation was very straightforward to
6:20
be fair I do have experience in
6:21
installing blinds and doing a a wide
6:23
range of of construction type task and
6:26
so for me it was very simple and
6:27
straightforward your mileage is going to
6:29
obviously depending on how comfortable
6:32
you are with um using tools and so but I
6:36
mean there really really isn't a lot of
6:38
tools in involved really as a matter of
6:40
maybe doing a little bit of measuring
6:43
driving in a few screws and then just
6:45
having the sense of being able to uh
6:47
figure out the attach points and so that
6:49
you can actually put that blind up and
6:51
kind of do a little bit of a pull type
6:53
Rock style to where you rotate it up
6:55
into the clips really was something that
6:57
could be done in as long as you have the
7:00
right size blind something that I could
7:02
typically do in less than a half hour so
7:06
let's talk about some things that I like
7:08
uh first of all I really do like the
7:10
look of the fabric here um this is kind
7:13
of a mixed design and so it's actually
7:15
very complimentary to the overall color
7:17
scheme I did find that there was a nice
7:19
variety of looks and options that were
7:21
available and what I chose online it
7:25
proved to be very consistent with the
7:28
actual fabric of the material that
7:29
arrived and so I appreciate that I like
7:32
the solar panel option and the fact that
7:34
it can be easily hidden and also it then
7:36
eliminates the need for doing any kind
7:39
of uh other type of charging uh your
7:43
other option is it would come with an AC
7:45
adapter and a USBC Port there and so you
7:49
could charge it through that means now
7:51
what I I found out kind of after the
7:53
fact is that the normal charging process
7:55
through that USB uh port and then just
7:58
plugging into the wall it takes about 5
8:00
to 6 hours to fully charge the battery
8:03
but the battery will then last for about
8:05
6 months of normal use and so you know
8:09
at the end of the day that's really not
8:10
all that big a deal and so if you decide
8:11
to not spend the extra money for the
8:13
solar panel it's really a relatively
8:15
small inconvenience and so so long as
8:18
you're uh the the top of the blind is
8:20
not up really really high where it's
8:21
truly inaccessible I suspect you can get
8:24
by without the solar panel but the solar
8:25
panel so far has worked a treat and so
8:28
no concerns right that and as I look up
8:30
right at it right now I can see a green
8:32
flashing up there that indicates that it
8:34
is receiving power input from the solar
8:37
panel even though outside it is kind of
8:40
a gray typical winter kind of day
8:44
without any kind of great sunlight out
8:47
there as you can see the motor itself it
8:49
works relatively quietly um it's as
8:53
noted it's not super fast but it is fast
8:56
enough that you know you're basically
8:58
smoothly operating I also appreciate the
9:00
fact that I do in this case I do have
9:03
I've elected to have one section that
9:05
can be cranked out in this large window
9:07
that's behind me here and so what I I
9:10
found is that if I took off that crank
9:12
handle that it very smoothly goes over
9:15
the top of that kind of Bulge out
9:17
section it doesn't hang up on it at all
9:19
it just kind of works smoothly and
9:21
naturally and so no problem there I also
9:24
appreciate the fact that it all these
9:26
smart blinds are truly integrated in all
9:29
the modern processes and so a lot of
9:31
people are are interested in the idea of
9:34
of smart home and kind of automating
9:35
their home to maybe help with having the
9:38
blinds in a certain position at a
9:39
certain time of day you can program a
9:42
custom position uh into even through
9:44
through the remote or you can do it
9:46
through using something like uh you know
9:48
Google home things like that and so the
9:52
upside of that is that if you're needing
9:53
to have the maybe the shade Clos at a
9:56
certain time of day because you're
9:57
wanting to block maybe some solar energy
10:00
from coming into the home you can do
10:01
that or to have it open at a particular
10:03
time you can automate all that process
10:05
which is really going to appeal to a
10:07
certain kind of of customer also I found
10:10
that the installation process was nice
10:12
and straightforward so how about some
10:14
things that I'm not as crazy about well
10:17
just on a practical level dealing with
10:19
an online company means that you're not
10:20
going to get any kind of local support
10:22
or installation help and so you know if
10:26
you're not comfortable with doing uh
10:28
kind of doing doing the whole process of
10:30
measuring and then installing a blind
10:32
you might want to deal with a local
10:34
company because you're going to get a
10:37
maybe a little bit more help in that
10:38
process and they their customer service
10:41
seems to be good and and and of course I
10:43
ended up having to use it as I've
10:45
already confessed and so anyway uh so
10:48
just be aware of that blinds of course
10:51
can be expensive and so for this
10:52
configuration it is a very large window
10:55
that I am covering here um the window
10:58
itself is about 6t by 7t roughly and so
11:02
it is a large window so it's a large
11:03
blind and so uh but this cost roughly
11:07
$500 including shipping uh there are
11:09
some discounts right now but just so you
11:11
know kind of the basic ballpark of what
11:14
this particular blind cost and so blinds
11:17
can be expensive that's a potential
11:19
negative a third potential negative is
11:20
that some competitors will offer some
11:23
protection and I'm talking about online
11:24
companies that do blinds through a
11:26
similar process they will offer some
11:28
protection that even if you're the one
11:29
that makes a mistake in measuring um
11:32
that you do get you know maybe one
11:34
remake or something like that and that's
11:37
not necessarily the case from kind of
11:39
digging into the fine print doesn't seem
11:41
to be the case here so on that note be
11:44
sure to measure the top the middle and
11:47
the bottom and so in my case because the
11:49
top of the window was fairly High I
11:51
measured the bottom and I measured the
11:52
middle and those measurements were
11:54
consistent and unfortunately in the top
11:57
it actually squeezed in a little bit at
11:59
the top and so the byproduct was is that
12:01
the original blind was about uh you know
12:04
38 um off and so I couldn't in install
12:08
it in that space and so you know had to
12:10
get it remade so learn from my mistake
12:13
measure the top the middle and the
12:15
bottom to make sure that and obviously
12:17
you're going to want to take the
12:18
narrowest measurement to make sure that
12:20
it's going to fit consistently up and
12:22
down so my conclusion is this based on
12:25
my limited experience with just one
12:27
blind I haven't done a wide variety
12:29
blinds like I've done in some other
12:30
cases I actually really like the smart
12:32
Wings motorized blind that I got I
12:35
haven't always invested in motorized
12:37
blinds in the past um you know you don't
12:41
always need them truth be told but they
12:43
can be very handy if you happen to have
12:45
very high Windows which are not going to
12:48
be easily accessed through other means
12:50
they're also very handy if you're
12:52
wanting a very clean looking
12:53
installation where you don't have
12:55
anything kind of dangling down on the
12:56
side they're also I think very handy if
12:59
if you're looking for this style of
13:00
blind kind of a zebra style application
13:03
because you can just stop it wherever
13:05
you want and so you can have some
13:07
Precision if you want that full slot
13:09
available it's quite easy to do with the
13:11
remote and not always as easy to do with
13:14
you know some kind of of other control
13:16
and obviously in this case you're
13:19
depending on how often you're opening
13:20
and closing your blinds for me it's not
13:22
all that often and so it means that I'm
13:25
putting relatively wear and tear on that
13:27
motor and it's far less likely a wear
13:29
out than something if I was adjusting a
13:31
a handle up and down I have ran into
13:33
some issues with blinds in the past
13:34
where after a while particularly if
13:36
they're a roller style that after a
13:38
while you know you're you're having to
13:39
pull further and further down because
13:40
they don't want to retract as well so
13:43
this to me at least in the short term
13:45
I'm about a month in seems like it might
13:48
be a more elegant solution in the long
13:50
term and so so far I would say that if
13:53
you are willing to spend the money to
13:55
get the motorized blind the motorized
13:57
blind is pretty cool
13:59
now right now there is a current sale
14:01
around the holidays where it's 8% off
14:04
sitewide and then if you're making a big
14:06
order $1,500 or more it's 12% off which
14:09
could make some significant difference
14:11
in your overall price of what you're
14:13
paying for so if you're looking for
14:15
blinds here is my experience with smart
14:17
wings so far so good I'm Dustin Abbott
