Hi, I'm Dustin Abbott and I'm here today to do a test on the new 80D and to compare it to the
0:12
previous generation 70D when it comes to its ability to prevent moray in video shooting
0:19
The 70D has proven to be a great video rig in a number of ways and I've shot a lot of my recent
0:25
YouTube videos on it. However, it's this very shirt that caused me an issue not very long ago
0:31
I was in about a month ago, I was shooting an episode for my review of the Canon EF 50mm F1.0
0:39
L series lens. It's a legendary lens. It's a rare lens. And if you haven't seen that video
0:45
take a look here. But as soon as I began video editing in post, I knew that this shirt was going
0:51
to be problematic, but I had a lot of things going on and had to squeeze in the video shoot
0:58
into my schedule. And so I ended up in the wardrobe that I had available, which was included
1:04
this shirt. And in video production, there was a lot of that moray effect where the repeating
1:09
pattern of the fabric material it shows up in kind of a sheen shimmer superimposed pattern over the top of it in odd colors and Amore has been one of the downfalls of Canon video production and a number of its camera models there a few that
1:27
are better at it and a few that are worse and in fact there are some camera lines that diverge
1:33
like the 5ds or 5ds are similar to some Canon or some Nikon products that have given you the choice
1:40
between having that low-pass filter there or not there. And with it there, it helps to eliminate
1:47
more and with it not there, the Canon, or excuse me, the camera can produce a slightly sharper image
1:54
but at the cost of adding some more in certain situations. So is the Canon 80D better for
2:02
shooting video and eliminating more in these kinds of situations? Well, we're going to find out. I'm
2:08
using the identical lens and shirt combination that caused it before. And I'm shooting on the
2:14
80D right now. And then we'll switch to the 70D and see if the result is any different
2:21
Okay, so now I've switched to the Canon 70D. And let's take a look at the video here for a moment
2:27
as I doing my standard presenting to see if there is any difference in the more between the 70d and the 80d Let see if Canon is actually helped to solve this problem in the new generation camera okay i back after having spent some time reviewing the
2:44
results from both cameras on a good size it's a 24 inch professionally calibrated very high
2:51
resolution monitor that i use for my video editing and so at first i looked at the 80d clip and my
2:59
initial reaction was, well, that problem is not completely solved. And as I'm sure you've been
3:04
able to see, there is what appears like a light sheen across the shirt, which is really a very
3:09
tightly checked pattern on it. At the same time, there aren't distracting waves and patterns that
3:15
are moving across it. And so while I initially was disappointed when I saw the 80D result and
3:22
that it wasn't completely eliminated, I then watched the 70D result. And when I saw the 70D
3:28
result, I thought, wow, there has been some progress here. The 70D result showed a lot of
3:34
rippling green patterns across the shirt that were far more distracting. They were moving if
3:39
there was any kind of movement of my body. And unlike just kind of a constant sheen that was
3:46
there instead there was a very distracting pattern So my end conclusion is that while the ADD has not completely eliminated the moray problem it has reduced it enough to where I no longer find it to be offensive for my own personal viewing in the way that I did
4:01
with results from this shirt and from the 70D in that same kind of situation. And so there are some
4:09
advances being made there with that. And once again, this is just one other area where the 80D
4:15
is demonstrating to me that Canon, while it hasn't made a massive evolutionary leap with the 80D
4:21
it has produced a camera that is pretty much good at everything. It may not excel in any particular
4:28
way, and on paper, I would say that the Sony A6300 seems to have it beat, but when it comes to the
4:35
actual functionality and the use of the camera, so far I'm very pleased with the Canon 80D
4:41
and when it comes to this moray test it's just one more step in the right direction
