0:10
hi I'm Dustin Abbott and I'm here today
0:12
to take a look at the mega dap etz 21
0:16
pro adapter that allows you to use Sony
0:19
e-mount lenses on a Nikon z-mount camera
0:23
one thing I quickly found is that this
0:25
is a very different experience from Old
0:27
School adapters I've used a lot of
0:28
adapters over the years
0:30
often it's to take a DSLR Mount and to
0:33
convert it into a mirrorless Mount
0:36
either within a system or from one brand
0:38
to another uh I've obviously used
0:40
various adapters for old school mounts
0:43
like m42 and uh various pin tax K mounts
0:47
like that to again to adapt typically
0:49
manual focus lenses this is a very
0:51
different experience probably my
0:52
favorite adapter of the Canon EF to uh
0:56
Sony e-mount era was the sigma mc11 and
1:00
so I'll just use that as kind of a case
1:01
in point here the sigma mc11 which
1:04
allowed you to use Canon EF on Sony Fe
1:07
it was 26 mm in length and it weighed
1:10
125 G so it definitely changed the
1:13
nature of a lens both in its weight but
1:15
then in particular in its balance point
1:17
having to move it out and that
1:19
difference that 26 mm was required for
1:21
the difference flange distance to come
1:23
from a camera mount with a mirror to get
1:26
the optical path of the lens to a place
1:29
where it needed to be for a camera
1:31
without a mirror so I mean I I
1:34
personally found that I tired of that
1:36
process I didn't like the way that
1:38
lenses looked or balanced and So
1:40
eventually I just replaced my Canon EF
1:43
lenses steadily with equivalents in
1:46
either Canon RF or in Sony Emil so in
1:50
this particular case I with this Mega
1:52
dap adapter it is a completely different
1:54
reality first of all the adapter itself
1:56
is only 2 mm thick and it weighs is only
2:00
on my scale 46 G and so basically it is
2:04
the equivalent of just having a
2:06
different actual lens mount there it's
2:09
not like it's an adapter that adds any
2:11
kind of noticeable thickness and in fact
2:13
once you have it mounted on your camera
2:15
the truth the matter is is that I
2:16
suspect you won't even notice that it's
2:18
there everything mounts stably without
2:21
wobble in there and for the most part
2:23
the adapter just works allowing you to
2:25
use those Sony e-mount lenses from a
2:27
variety of brands in this case which
2:29
we'll explore more on the Nikon Z Mount
2:31
cameras in this case I've tested on the
2:33
Nikon Z8 but this does include apsc and
2:37
MEAP claims at least as of this moment
2:39
that they are the only adapter that
2:40
allows you to do that I'm actually going
2:42
to be looking at a few adapters this
2:44
week so today I'm looking at the mega
2:46
dap etz 21 Pro but I also look at a less
2:49
expensive option from the popular brand
2:51
newer the newer nwz adapter and then at
2:55
the end of the week I'll do a
2:56
head-to-head comparison between the two
2:58
and let you know what your kind of
3:00
gaining what you're losing by going with
3:02
a more expensive adapter in this case
3:05
the more expensive Mega dap cost about
3:08
$250 so is it worth it well that's what
3:10
we're going to explore in today's review
3:13
today's episode is sponsored by the
3:14
Phantom tracker are you someone prone to
3:16
misplacing your wallet or bag if so the
3:19
Phantom tracker card is definitely for
3:21
you this credit card size tracker fits
3:23
perfectly in any wallet or bag and
3:25
functions like an Apple Air tag it can
3:27
be locally tracked via a 95 5 D beeping
3:30
noise that can be heard up to 300 ft
3:32
away but also on a global level via
3:35
Apple's find my network and its map
3:37
unlike many other trackers the Phantom
3:39
tracker card has a built-in rechargeable
3:41
battery that can be easily charged via
3:43
any wireless charger and a single charge
3:46
will last up to 6 months the low price
3:48
of the Phantom tracker makes it a
3:50
perfect gift and you can save even more
3:52
by visiting store. fanom wallet.com and
3:55
using Code dustin2 a checkout that
4:00
and use code dustin2 for 20% off so
4:03
let's start by talking about the build
4:05
and handling first of all this is not
4:07
only the second generation of their
4:09
adapters they had an etz 111 to begin
4:11
with now this etz 21 uh or et21 Pro
4:16
replaces a older ET z21 and so what is
4:20
different between the etz 21 and then
4:23
the pro model well a couple of things
4:25
first of all you now can do firmware
4:27
updates in the camera just like native
4:30
lenses and so that is obviously a
4:31
significant Improvement it has a better
4:34
mechanical fit and design to allow for
4:36
more thirdparty lenses to fit properly
4:39
and I did find I I tested with four
4:41
different brands and I found that I had
4:43
zero issues with the fit on any of them
4:45
it also has a redesigned lens release
4:48
button here on the side and then so
4:50
obviously while I haven't used the
4:52
previous one I can say that this current
4:54
one works well I also did a little bit
4:56
of research and found that in the year
4:58
that this adapter has been the pro
5:00
version has been out there have actually
5:01
been five firmware updates so that's
5:03
always important to me because you know
5:05
you can say well it's firmware updatable
5:07
but if you never offer up any kind of
5:09
firmware uh obviously you're not really
5:12
supporting the product it seems like
5:13
Mead dap is doing that and as I looked
5:15
through some user reviews it seems like
5:17
some of the issues that people addressed
5:19
along the way either having some
5:21
compatibility issues after say on this
5:24
Z8 after the firmware 2.0 some people
5:26
had a compatibility issue that was
5:27
solved via firmware obviously tested it
5:30
on the Z8 without any kind of issue you
5:32
know there's bugs that have been
5:33
squashed through that they've improved
5:35
the function and they've added
5:36
compatibility to include Brands like vro
5:39
for example which I'll do some vro tests
5:42
today so as noted it is only 2 mm thick
5:45
and so really really tiny it's made of I
5:48
believe a a stainless steel product so
5:50
it seems tough and durable from what I
5:52
can tell uh I noted that lens mounted in
5:56
what I would consider a good balance the
5:57
tolerances are good there to where it it
6:00
think lenses fit without me having to
6:02
force them or to feel like I can't
6:04
remove them but they also fit well
6:06
enough to where I don't feel a wobble
6:08
afterwards and so kind of that you know
6:10
perfect medium that I'm looking for
6:12
there so in this case pretty simple
6:14
because it's so thin you have at the
6:16
front of the adapter you have the
6:18
contacts for the Sony lens to touch to
6:21
and at the rear you have the contacts to
6:23
communicate with the Nikon Z body and
6:26
I'm assuming there's some kind of
6:28
processor in between it's going to take
6:30
the focus information from the Nikon
6:33
camera and interpret it to the control
6:35
of the focus Motors in the Sony ount
6:37
based lens one thing I did note that
6:40
I'll talk more about In the comparison
6:42
review but relative to the newer uh
6:44
adapter I did find that the MEAP is the
6:47
one that produces proper XF information
6:50
and so I found that lenses as I looked
6:52
in the uh in Lightroom the excess
6:55
information that it was properly
6:56
reported which uh is is important
6:59
obviously for sorting at a later date
7:01
and so I certainly appreciated that so
7:04
how about the actual autofocus process
7:05
that's really what we're it's coming
7:07
down to as you might expect or I hope
7:09
you would expect the focus speed you're
7:11
able to achieve with an individual lens
7:14
really depends a lot on how fast it can
7:16
focus on its native Mount so faster
7:18
focusing lenses like Sony G Master with
7:21
their multiple linear XD uh Focus Motors
7:25
those are going to focus quite quickly
7:26
and in fact here you can see that I
7:28
adapted this this uh Sony 50mm f1.4 GM
7:32
lens and I compared it to the Nicor 50mm
7:35
f1.4 that I've just reviewed and I found
7:38
that in fact the GM lens even adapted
7:42
focused faster than what the Nicor lens
7:44
did stands the reason we've got dual
7:46
linear Focus Motors high-speed linear
7:48
Focus Motors in the GM lens we have only
7:51
a STM motor in the Nicor lens so if
7:54
you've got a fast focusing lens on
7:56
Native it's going to still Focus fast
7:58
just a little bit slower I would say
8:00
that what you can take as a rule of
8:02
thumb is that autofocus speed is always
8:04
going to be just a little bit slower
8:05
than what it was on its native Mount
8:07
remember that there is data conversions
8:09
having to take place you know Focus
8:11
algorithms from one platform being
8:13
converted to the focus algorithms of
8:14
another so there is going to be a little
8:16
bit of slowdown in the pipeline but
8:18
fortunately it if you have a fast lens
8:20
to begin with it's still going to focus
8:22
fast I did find kind of one consistent
8:26
Quirk just in real world use and that
8:28
was that when I was out shooting
8:30
and I wanted to focus on a foreground
8:32
subject it was typically the case to
8:34
where the lens wanted to focus on the
8:37
background rather than on the foreground
8:39
subject and so in you know in that
8:41
process I had to do kind of the typical
8:42
thing that if I you know was focusing on
8:44
something was just kind of enclos there
8:46
I would actually Focus either down at
8:47
the ground or at something that was a
8:49
little bit thicker a little bit higher
8:51
contrast and if I can move focus into
8:53
that space I could then go ahead and I
8:56
could get proper autofocus as you can
8:58
see in this particular
9:01
shot what I did find however is that
9:03
when Focus was locked you know in the
9:05
proper Zone that Focus was actually very
9:07
accurate and I had no issues with uh
9:10
getting accurate Focus even at wide
9:13
f1.4 now interestingly I happen to have
9:17
two lenses of the same or the same lens
9:19
and two different mounts and so in the
9:21
case of the vro af6 mm f1.8 I had both
9:25
the Sony e-mount version and then the
9:27
Nikon z-mount version so I could do some
9:29
Direct comparisons what I found is that
9:31
as you can see here the native zount
9:33
version definitely focused faster um
9:36
however I did find that Focus was fast
9:39
enough you you know using the adapted
9:41
emount version that in real world use
9:44
was just fine uh but you will get a
9:45
little bit more focused speed on the
9:47
native lens as you would probably expect
9:50
what I also found however is that there
9:53
was uh as far as the the sharpness I
9:55
didn't find like there was any kind of
9:57
loss it was kind of like some give and
9:58
take in the frame which to me points
10:00
more to the sample variation between the
10:02
two copies of the lens rather than any
10:05
kind of adapter related issue so for
10:07
example I saw that I got better Center
10:10
sharpness with the z-mount version
10:12
actually got better Edge performance
10:14
with the uh Sony ount version and so
10:16
again I there's not enough there to
10:18
attribute to an adapter I also found
10:21
that I didn't really see extra chromatic
10:22
aberration flare resistance was about
10:24
the same all of these things I basically
10:26
expected because there is no Optical
10:28
glass in this adapter it's just air
10:30
going through there and basically all it
10:32
is other than changing the focus is just
10:33
a little tiny spacer to move everything
10:37
you know that 2 mm forward where the
10:39
optical path is correct for a Sony lens
10:42
you know on a mounted on a z-mount body
10:45
so anyway it basically worked the way
10:47
that I I thought that it should the one
10:49
thing I will say that popped up for me
10:51
optically is that I found that in many
10:52
situations I tended to get a little bit
10:54
of underexposure using adapted lenses on
10:57
the Z Mount body and I found that if I
10:59
dialed in a third or even twoth thirds
11:01
of stop of exposure it actually got me
11:03
more into the right Zone I would say
11:05
that on average I underexposed by about
11:08
a half stop uh when using lenses on the
11:11
adapter and in the head-to-head
11:13
comparison they in fact did meter
11:15
differently using the exact same lens
11:17
you know one adapted one in the native
11:18
Mount so just something to you know
11:21
maybe think about for the future now
11:24
another fast focusing third party lens
11:26
was is the Tamron 35 to 150 mm with its
11:29
vxd um you know voice coil motor and I
11:32
found that autofocus was nice and snappy
11:34
with that definitely very usable I did
11:36
find however when Nala was trotting
11:39
towards me and that kind of persistent
11:40
action that the results were not bad
11:43
it's not like autofocus wasn't moving
11:45
but what I did find is a consistent mild
11:47
back focus to where rather than being on
11:50
her eye it was more like in the middle
11:52
of her neck where Focus actually was it
11:54
was close enough that the results don't
11:56
look bad they don't look completely out
11:58
of focus but they're not crisp either so
12:01
I wouldn't recommend this combination if
12:03
you're or really any of these adapted
12:05
lenses if you're going to shoot
12:06
high-speed action you need a native
12:08
mount lens you're going to get better
12:09
results in that regard but for most
12:11
things and most situations Focus was
12:14
just fine and it focused accurately it
12:16
focused quickly and in general I was
12:19
very happy with the results that I got
12:20
so how about on the video side of things
12:23
I found that with previous adapted
12:25
scenarios video AF was pretty much
12:27
garbage in this case it's actually
12:29
fairly decent I found that Focus works
12:32
for you know for example Focus you know
12:35
purposely doing Focus pulls autofocus
12:37
pools back and forth I found that
12:38
there's a little bit more pulsing in the
12:40
process as you can see and every now and
12:42
then kind of a start of a backwards
12:44
Focus rack uh just a little bit less
12:46
overall Focus confidence again you know
12:49
not unexpected in this
12:50
situation for example when using a lenss
12:53
with a a little bit slower autofocus
12:55
scenario which would be like the sigma
12:57
885mm f1.4 again a single STM Focus
13:00
motor I find that as you can see here it
13:02
focused fairly smoothly as I approached
13:05
the camera using the mega dap adapter
13:07
but what I did find is that when I
13:09
ducked out of the frame and then duck
13:10
back into the frame you can see it
13:12
really didn't pick me back up I switched
13:14
over to the Sony 50mm f1.4 again a more
13:18
confident focusing lens and I found that
13:20
it was able to you know fairly quickly
13:22
and successfully pick me back up when I
13:25
stepped back into frame so again here's
13:27
your rule of thumb better l lenses when
13:29
it comes to autofocus are going to
13:31
produce better results when you adapt
13:33
them if you're using older lenses or
13:36
cheap lenses that didn't have a great
13:37
autofocus system to begin with you might
13:39
be disappointed with the results you're
13:40
going to get if you're using good lenses
13:42
with good autofocus then you're probably
13:44
going to be generally happy with the
13:46
results that you get so my conclusion is
13:49
this if you have actually switched
13:50
camera systems or more like myself you
13:53
own multiple systems being able to
13:55
fairly seamlessly use your Sony e-mount
13:57
lenses on Nikon Z cameras is pretty
14:00
fantastic you're getting that proper XF
14:02
data getting proper information for the
14:05
in camera VR you know all of these
14:07
various things and autofocus works
14:10
really well overall for uh when shooting
14:13
Stills and reasonably well even when
14:15
shooting video so in general I was not
14:18
at all disappointed with the results
14:19
that I got I do know from experience it
14:22
can be a very expensive process to sell
14:24
off lenses in one brand One Mount and
14:26
then replace them with new lenses is and
14:29
another brand or another Mount and so
14:31
this is a great way to save money
14:34
particularly if you have a lens that you
14:36
love you know for example there really
14:37
isn't an equivalent of this Sony 50mm
14:40
f1.4 GM on Nikon right now so the
14:43
ability to use a really exceptional lens
14:46
and use it quite well on Nikon is
14:48
definitely intriguing I think above all
14:51
what is going to make this more usable
14:53
in the long term for people is the fact
14:55
that the adapter itself is so Compact
14:58
and it's so low weight that it really
15:00
doesn't disrupt your shooting process at
15:02
all and I suspect you're going to be
15:05
happy with the results you're able to
15:06
get and also happy with the overall
15:08
usability because you've sacrificed so
15:11
little in the adapting process and
15:13
frankly for me that's often where things
15:15
have fallen apart in the past I just
15:17
kind of get sick of using the adapter
15:19
and in this case it feels like that
15:21
would be less of an issue overall time
15:23
will tell as I move ahead but I
15:25
certainly love the option of using my
15:27
mini Sony E lenses and a variety of
15:30
brands on my Nikon zount camera and I
15:33
suspect you will do the same I'm Dustin
15:35
Abbott I hope that this has helped you
15:37
today if you want more information I do
15:38
have linkage to my full text review in
