0:10
hi i'm dustin abbott i recently reviewed
0:12
the snyder cruise notch and lk samyang
0:16
14 to 24 millimeter f/2.8 wide angle
0:19
zoom lens on sony e-mount those of you
0:22
that watch that review know that i was
0:24
quite impressed with the lens i like the
0:27
package when it comes to the size and
0:29
weight the autofocus capabilities the
0:33
image quality and it even has great
0:35
close focus capabilities but as people
0:38
began to respond to that review i was
0:39
surprised by how many of you asked about
0:41
how well it would work adapted to nikon
0:43
z using an adapter like the mega and
0:46
frankly i hadn't even it hadn't really
0:48
crossed my mind and i was actually
0:50
delighted to uh for you to pose that
0:52
question because it's like you know what
0:54
i have a nikon camera i should test to
0:56
see how it works because that could be
0:58
an intriguing option there obviously
1:00
nikon does have their own 14 to 24
1:03
millimeter f2.8s lens however it is
1:05
significantly bigger it's about 30 mm
1:08
longer and about 200 grams heavier and
1:10
it cost about $800 more about $2,000 and
1:14
so particularly if you're someone like
1:16
myself who has two platforms that the
1:18
lens could be used on both so i was
1:21
intrigued by the idea so i've shot you
1:23
know pretty much exclusively with this
1:24
combination over the past week for both
1:26
photos and videos using the megaap etz
1:29
21 pro adapter and here's what i have
1:33
found when it comes to the you know
1:35
build side of things really not a whole
1:37
lot changes the mega dap adds 2
1:40
millimeters of you know length to the
1:43
lens and 43 g and so it's negligible in
1:46
both metrics it means that the
1:47
combination is still only around 500 g
1:50
the one kind of fly in the ointment is
1:52
if you are concerned about shooting in
1:54
adverse conditions the megadap is not
1:57
weather sealed and so you are
1:59
potentially adding a compromised point
2:01
because while the lens itself is
2:03
thoroughly weather sealed obviously and
2:05
the the camera is weather sealed that
2:07
adapter there in between there is a
2:09
slight possibility that some moisture
2:12
could get in there it's probably not
2:13
very much because everything does
2:15
connect tightly together however that's
2:17
just a potential risk there i did note
2:20
one situational glitch in terms of the
2:22
handling and operation of the lens and
2:24
that was if i had gone into their uh
2:28
their software and i had changed the
2:30
function of the afmf switch to where if
2:33
it's in the af position the uh focus
2:36
ring will work as an aperture ring i
2:38
found that that did create a bit of a
2:39
glitch on nikon to where sometimes
2:41
aperture would jump around a little bit
2:44
but more importantly as i was zooming in
2:46
and out it's where i particularly
2:48
noticed it i would see a little bit of
2:50
some flashing here and there because i
2:52
think aperture wasn't responding
2:54
consistently and so i went back into the
2:57
software i changed the setting back to
2:59
the default setting where in the af
3:01
position it just functions the ring
3:03
isn't really doing anything and then i
3:06
went where the manual focus obviously
3:08
controls manual focus when i changed
3:10
that back to the default setting for the
3:12
switch that problem went away and so i
3:14
was able to zoom in and out as you can
3:16
see here without any kind of glitching
3:18
aperture works completely normally and
3:20
it works in that sense just like a
3:22
native lens so as far as the handling of
3:25
the lens those are the only two
3:26
potential flies in the ointment one of
3:28
those is a kind of a theoretical problem
3:30
if you're shooting in really nasty
3:32
environment maybe not the best
3:33
combination and then the other is easily
3:36
solved just by eliminate that issue i
3:38
suspect it has to do with nikon's
3:40
perception of a uh you know customizable
3:42
control ring and so it isn't really that
3:45
and so i think that there's a little bit
3:46
of a miscommunication that comes as a
3:48
byproduct so how about on the autof
3:50
focus side of things here's where i was
3:52
actually shocked autofocus is still
3:55
shockingly fast and good and you can see
3:57
here that focus is still nearly
3:59
instantaneous it zips back and forth uh
4:02
with extreme speed it's it's actually
4:03
one of the better nikon zmount lenses
4:06
that i've used in terms of autofocus
4:08
speed and so i i think that that part is
4:10
definitely impressing i found that i had
4:13
good accuracy focus remains nearly
4:15
silent i mean bottom line is it felt
4:17
like using a native lens and i was able
4:18
to just snap photos without any kind of
4:21
thought about autofocus at all other
4:23
than the fact that autofocus was fast
4:25
and so that was great on the video side
4:27
of things here's where i i had low
4:29
expectations and once again my
4:31
expectations really were exceeded so yes
4:33
you can see that focus pools they might
4:36
be a little bit slower however you can
4:39
see that while they're not fast they are
4:41
accurate and they're well damped you're
4:43
not seeing any kind of pulsing uh any
4:45
kind of visible steps any kind of
4:47
settling it's not moving fast from point
4:49
a to point b and back but it is moving
4:52
consistently and smoothly in fact i shot
4:55
a whole segment that i was putting
4:57
together uh just kind of an intro to a
4:59
space and and talking about it i shot
5:02
the whole thing using this combination
5:04
and i never noticed any kind of
5:06
autofocus glitching along the way
5:08
furthermore there does seem to be uh
5:10
communication of the correction profile
5:12
and so while as we'll get to in a moment
5:14
correction isn't perfect uh it is still
5:17
sufficiently good even at 14 mm for
5:20
shooting in the space with a lot of
5:22
lightly colored walls that i wasn't
5:24
seeing you know visible vignette heavily
5:26
showing up and distortion was corrected
5:28
well enough that it really didn't seem
5:30
to be a factor even here on nikon kudos
5:33
so how about image quality obviously
5:36
this is a lower resolution point even at
5:38
its highest my z8 is 45 megapixel but my
5:41
a7r5 is 61 megapixels and so in that
5:44
sense this is having an easier go here
5:47
on nikon than what it did on sony so i
5:50
would say if anything results look like
5:52
almost even sharper because it's a lower
5:54
resolution point and it basically it
5:57
looks fantastic and particularly i felt
5:59
like the 14 millimeter corners rather
6:02
than looking worse actually looked
6:04
better and and so and i would say that
6:06
at 24 millimeters i you know at wide
6:09
open there was a little bit less
6:10
contrast as it was on on sony but
6:13
stopping down to f4 restore that and you
6:15
can see by f5.6 it's sharp in the center
6:17
sharp in the mid-frame sharp in the
6:19
corners at 24 millm as well so uh you
6:23
know testing all across 14 mm testing
6:25
all across 24 millime even wide open
6:28
it's looking very good you stop it down
6:30
to f5.6 it's sharp everywhere and so
6:32
zero problems there now that's not to
6:35
say that there was no issue again the
6:37
correction pro profile does come over
6:39
but as i have found on every lens that i
6:42
have reviewed on both sony e and nikon z
6:45
whether they're developing a fresh uh
6:48
you know mount for the lens for nikon z
6:50
or i'm adapting it there's always a lot
6:52
more vignette on nikon and the reason
6:55
for that is simple the diameter of
6:57
nikon's mount is much larger
7:00
particularly compared to e-mount and so
7:02
as a byproduct it just means that uh
7:04
lenses have not necessarily been
7:06
engineered to go all the way to the
7:08
edges of that that mounted so there
7:09
there is more vignette that comes as a
7:11
byproduct and here i found that i could
7:13
max out particularly at 14 millimeters i
7:15
could max out the slider and i still
7:18
felt like i could use a little bit more
7:19
so it's a lot of vignette very heavy and
7:22
at 24 millimeters or and basically
7:24
anything other than 14 millimeters it's
7:27
it's still a lot i need to pretty much
7:29
max out the slider but it's still it's
7:30
correcting everything so i mean outside
7:32
of that all the same optical attributes
7:35
other than that remain the same i mean
7:37
it still has very low fringing either of
7:39
longitudinal or lateral style chromatic
7:41
aberrations every you know flare
7:43
resistance is the same it's basically
7:45
doing all the same stuff other than with
7:48
more vignette and so at the end of the
7:50
day i would say the only new issue is
7:52
the additional vignette but optically it
7:55
looks great so no problems there so my
7:58
conclusion is this if you're intrigued
8:00
at that combination this is a shockably
8:02
shockingly viable uh transition i mean
8:04
it's the lens works very much like
8:06
natively i've enjoyed using it on nikon
8:10
you know full stop no caveat there it's
8:12
it's been a blast to use and so i mean
8:14
other than needing to correct for a bit
8:16
more vignette in post sometimes that's
8:18
really been the only factor that i've
8:20
run into and it's hardly the first wide-
8:21
angle zoom that i've used before or
8:23
wide-angle prime for that matter that
8:25
suffers from a lot of vignette and so
8:28
you know that's part of the lens to
8:30
begin with and it's just magnified on
8:32
nikon z i think that this makes it an
8:35
extra intriguing lens if you happen to
8:37
have multiple systems and you're looking
8:39
at it and saying "it's something i could
8:41
use on e-mount and on zmount as well."
8:43
and i would say absolutely if you have
8:45
an adapter like the mega dap it works
8:47
like a treat and is actually one of the
8:50
better ported over or adapted lenses
8:53
that i have used using the mega dap so
8:56
uh great and so if you're one of the
8:58
ones that was intrigued on how well it
9:00
worked great news on almost all fronts
9:02
and hopefully this little video has
9:04
helped you to determine whether or not
9:06
this is a lens that should be on your
9:08
radar if you're a nikon zmount shooter
9:10
as always thanks for watching have a
9:12
great day let the light in
