Nikon D850 Image Gallery

November 29th, 2017

A friendly subscriber (who wishes to remain anonymous) offered to loan me his hot new Nikon D850 and some lenses that I personally own in Canon mount so that I can do some direct comparisons with the Canon 5D Mark IV and equivalent lenses (Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC + Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 VC G2).  While my Canon brain has been struggling with the different Nikon ergonomics and trying to find all the settings I’m looking for, I can also attest to the fact that the camera does a great job of packing tons of resolution (45.7MP) into a true general purpose body, with a much more useful burst rate and better high ISO performance than the Canon 5DsR.  The Canon 5DsR is definitely a “specialist” camera, but the D850 takes that daunting “medium-format-like” resolution and packages it in a more user friendly and useful package.  I’ll be sharing some High ISO and resolution comparisons here, along with some examination of dynamic range, so stay tuned.  In the meantime, check out some of the general purpose photos I’ve been grabbing with the camera along the way.

Here’s Part 1 of my comparison between the Nikon D850 and the Canon 5D Mark IV:

Night Pro Vision 120F + 120R Rechargeable Cycle Lights

28 Taillight Review Title

Night Pro Vision Line 120F and 120R Rechargeable LED Headlights/Taillights

This is the time of year when I pull out my bike and start getting out on the road.  While I don’t know if I could be labelled an “avid cyclist”, it is certainly a sport that I enjoy and do fairly frequently.  Much like photography, cycling is a very gear oriented sport – from the cycle itself (complete with custom tires, derailleurs, bars, brakes, grips, seats/saddles, trip computers, pedals, and on and on) to the helmet, shoes, gloves, clothes, and much more.  You can spend a LOT of money on cycling.

28 Night ProVision Mounted

One important addition is if you are cycling in poor light is both headlights (to help you see) and taillights (to help others see you!).  In  this video I review an inexpensive set of rechargeable LED headlights (Night Pro Vision Line 120F Headlights) and taillights (Night Pro Vision 120R Taillights).  Check out this fun, interactive video to see if they are for you.

The great news is that you can win a set for yourself by entering the giveaway below.  It runs through the 16th of May.  There are a variety of ways that you can put in entries…so, “good luck!”.

Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R Preorder Thoughts

Dustin Abbott

March 24th, 2015

Canon was leapfrogged by Nikon in a huge way in the megapixel wars when Nikon introduced its D800 body several years ago.  The debate about the necessity of all of those MPs will continue to rage for the foreseeable future, but there was a consensus that Canon needed to produce a high megapixel body to compete.  There are both a number of photographers that actually need those megapixels and a much higher number of photographers who think they need them.  I will leave that debate for a future article.  Canon’s answer came (a few years late?) in the answer of a pair of new bodies, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R.  The latter is identical to the former except (as Nikon did with the D800E) it comes without a high pass filter to enable even greater resolution.  This comes at a cost in certain situations such as increased moire in video capture.  The 5DS/5DS R variants are now the class leaders in megapixels, boasting 50.6MP bodies powered by Dual Digic 6 Processors.  The Nikon D810 has a 36.3MP sensor.

Early reports are that the build is extremely robust and that weathersealing is potentially even more complete than the EOS 5DMK3.  The high megapixel count does come at a cost, however, as both the ISO range and frame rate lag behind that of the 5D3.  These are different cameras for different purposes.  I will attempt to procure one for review purposes in time.

In the meantime, if you are a person that knows you need the extreme resolution provided by the new 5DS line, B&H Photo is now accepting preorders.  Initial demand is expected to be very high, so I would recommend getting your preorder in if you are genuinely interested in getting your hands on one of these new beasts.
