0:11
hi I'm Dustin Abbott I just did a review
0:13
of the popular Mega dap ET 271 pro
0:17
adapter that allows you to use Sony uh
0:20
e-mount lenses on Nikon z-mount cameras
0:24
with autofocus but I'm back today with a
0:27
second review because newer has a
0:29
cheaper Al alternative the
0:31
nwz adapter that you can get for just
0:34
$160 it does have a few advantages
0:37
relative to the mega dap the MEAP also
0:40
has some advantages relative to it I'll
0:42
compare the two of these actually in a
0:44
future video but today I'm going to take
0:46
a look to see if newer cheaper adapter
0:49
can keep up with the mega dap adapter
0:52
which cost about 250 us so like the mega
0:56
dap these two adapters are very very
0:58
similar in size I it's a wild change
1:01
from what I was accustomed to with
1:02
adapters previously typically because
1:04
you're moving in the past moving from a
1:07
DSLR Mount to a mirrorless Mount which
1:09
means a pretty big difference between
1:11
the flange distance and what I mean by
1:13
that is the place where the optical the
1:15
Optics of the lens need to be to get
1:17
proper Focus throughout to infinity and
1:20
so in this case the optical path from
1:22
mirrorless had to move forward because
1:23
there's no um mirror that's a part of
1:26
the design in this case you're going
1:27
from one mirrorless design to another so
1:29
whereas for example the sigma mc11
1:32
adapter was 26 mm thick and weighed
1:35
about 125 G the newer adapter is only 2
1:39
mm thick because that's just the diff
1:41
distance between e Mount and Z Mount
1:43
terms of the optical path and it weighs
1:46
only 46 G so it's a third of the weight
1:48
and of course it is a 13th of the
1:52
thickness now in this case it allows you
1:55
to have a very tight fit to wear in many
1:58
cases it just feels like a second mount
2:00
on a lens and as you can see here it
2:02
adds very very little bulk to it and so
2:05
and and beyond that I I find that using
2:07
lenses adapted it doesn't even really
2:09
feel like I'm using them adapted because
2:11
the lens shape doesn't change the
2:13
profile the balance doesn't change and
2:15
so I really really love that aspect of
2:18
these particular designs I also found
2:20
that there was some variation in how
2:23
lenses fit in the the process I used
2:26
about seven different lenses and I found
2:28
that obviously some fit a little looser
2:30
some fit a little tighter but what I
2:32
will say is universally once they were
2:34
mounted there wasn't any kind of wobble
2:36
it didn't feel insecure in any kind of
2:38
way the adapter themselves are quite
2:41
simple so this newer adapter it's made
2:43
out of looks like some kind of stainless
2:45
steel and uh so on the front side you
2:49
have the contact points for the Sony
2:52
e-mount lens to attach to that and then
2:54
on the rear of it you have two different
2:56
sets of contact points one set is for
2:59
the community Comm unication to the Z
3:01
Mount body so with the Nikon protocols
3:03
then you also have a a bit fewer contact
3:07
points and that's for firmware updating
3:09
now I will say in this case it's one
3:11
area where I like the mega dap better
3:13
the new version of the mega dap allows
3:15
you to do firmware updates just from
3:16
within the camera like you would do for
3:18
a Nikon lens in this case however you're
3:21
using those rear contact points and
3:24
there is a m magnetically attaching uh
3:27
adapter that will attach to that and
3:29
then the other end is a usba a port or
3:32
that will allow you to plug into your
3:34
computer and run firmware updates from
3:36
that I find that the magnets don't
3:38
really hold uh the adapter or don't hold
3:42
in place to the adapter itself and so I
3:44
found that to run a firmware update
3:46
there was one available that I needed to
3:48
put a finger on there just kind of hold
3:50
it down and so that I was getting a
3:52
proper contact to the electronic
3:55
contacts on there and so without that it
3:57
didn't really work right so I don't
3:59
particularly love that that design there
4:02
another thing that I don't love about
4:04
the newer adapter as compared to the
4:05
mega dap is that it doesn't communicate
4:08
XF data properly and what I mean by that
4:11
it's not a problem with the aperture
4:13
value but it isn't proper in terms of
4:16
communicating the actual lens
4:18
designation itself and so for example
4:20
with the say the 35mm f1.4 GM or the uh
4:26
50mm f1.4 GM lens it says VR you know
4:34
f1.4g really none of those things are
4:36
accurate outside of the the actual focal
4:39
length and the aperture value but uh
4:41
with in the case of the mega dap
4:42
actually got proper it was coming
4:44
through as the GM lens as it was so uh
4:47
that's one area where I don't like one
4:49
thing I do like however because one of
4:50
my complaints about the mega dap is that
4:52
there you don't have any kind of weather
4:54
ceiling once you've you've done that
4:56
you're losing the actual gasket between
4:58
the adapter and the camera body itself
5:00
so your weather ceiling is probably not
5:02
going to be as good you do have an
5:03
option for $20 more uh from newer to get
5:06
actually one that does have a a gasket
5:09
and so you can complete that weather
5:10
ceiling so I appreciate that option is
5:12
there though I will note that the one
5:14
that I reviewed didn't have that gasket
5:16
and so I can't really comment on how
5:17
well it fits and how well all of that
5:20
works there's one other thing that I
5:22
really like about the newer adapter
5:25
again that's missing on the mega dap and
5:26
that is that as you can see here I've
5:28
actually got a and applied a this is the
5:32
tyo Samra 28mm f1.4 really great um
5:36
manual focus lens but it's Mount and so
5:39
I've got an mount adapter to e-mount
5:42
adapter and then I have that plugged
5:43
into the actual newer adapter so two
5:46
adapters are in place but of course the
5:48
Samra lens is a purely manual lens
5:50
there's no electronics on it at all
5:53
however as you can see here when I'm
5:54
using it with the newer adapter I
5:56
actually get Focus confirmation and so
5:59
it Prov provides Electronics to where
6:01
even Nikon's guide which shows you which
6:03
direction you need to rotate to get to
6:05
proper focus it works and there is the
6:07
green lightup box when you have achieved
6:09
proper focus and it works accurately so
6:12
that's a great kind of side benefit if
6:14
you have because it doesn't really
6:16
matter what Mount I I've adapted over
6:18
m42 Mount lenses and again the same kind
6:21
of thing I'm getting that electronic
6:23
confirmation that's not something that I
6:25
got through the mega dap adapter so a
6:27
little bit of a bonus there so of course
6:29
the main event is how good is autofocus
6:32
when you have the adapter in place I
6:34
found that in comparison to the mega dap
6:37
my results varied really widely compared
6:40
to the lens I had attached so I actually
6:42
started off with the 35mm f1.4 GM and
6:46
then the Tamron 35 to 150 mm vxd lens
6:50
based on just those two lenses alone I
6:52
thought the newer adapter was fantastic
6:54
maybe even better than the MEAP it
6:56
autofocused really really fantastically
6:59
and you can see here for example with
7:00
the 35gm good fast autofocus back and
7:04
forth great then I started to expand to
7:07
use more lenses so the 50mm f1.4 GM a
7:12
very similar lens in terms of the
7:14
autofocus system but for whatever reason
7:17
on the newer adapter I got radically
7:19
different results you can see here that
7:21
focus is very slow it is not at all
7:24
confident and that kind of was a
7:26
microcosm of what I saw in general so
7:29
for example I tried three different
7:30
Tamron lenses already mentioned the 35
7:32
to 150 mm worked great the new 90mm f2.8
7:36
macro also worked great the 28 to 200 mm
7:40
rxd lens it didn't hardly work at all in
7:43
fact I couldn't hardly get it to focus
7:46
to get even any kind of accurate
7:47
autofocus at all and so that was
7:50
terrible with vrs I used the 16 mm and
7:53
then the 135 mm lab lens 16 mm worked
7:57
great the 135 mm lab it just wh like a a
8:01
scared puppy and would not autofocus at
8:04
all so my results really really varied
8:07
very very widely depending upon the lens
8:10
that I had attached and so when it works
8:13
it works great and so out of those that
8:16
list of lenses that I gave you I would
8:18
say that around four of them worked
8:20
fantastic but in the case of the other
8:22
three that I test it I got much much
8:25
poorer results and in some case no
8:27
autofocus at all so it when it works as
8:31
mentioned it works great but it's less
8:33
flexible than the mega dap what I saw
8:35
with the mega dap is that some lenses
8:36
would focus more slowly than others but
8:39
all of them would would focus you know
8:42
to some degree and so I had much less
8:44
variability on that platform how about
8:47
the video side of things again it's
8:49
about the same story carried out here
8:52
for video so it depends a lot on the
8:55
lens itself if I had the 50 mm GM
8:58
attached you can see here that as I
8:59
approached the camera it didn't pick me
9:01
up at all nothing I pretended like I
9:04
wasn't even there the 35g master however
9:07
picked me up just fine even if I stepped
9:09
out of frame and Ste back in you can see
9:12
that Focus picked me back up fairly
9:13
smoothly good confidence throughout and
9:16
so no problems there so again big
9:19
variation depending on the lens you have
9:21
attached now if you do kind of more
9:23
extreme things like Focus pools you can
9:25
see here that even with the
9:27
35gm the focus pools are they're not as
9:30
confidence as a native lens there's a
9:32
little bit more pulsing some settling it
9:35
doesn't quite just stay on the focus
9:36
point but you know moves around a little
9:38
bit and so a video autofocus is going to
9:42
be a mixed bag and a very mixed bag
9:44
depending upon which lens that you
9:46
attach so my conclusion is this my
9:49
feeling about the newer
9:51
nwz obviously it varies widely depending
9:53
upon the lens that I have mounted to it
9:56
when I'm using a lens that it works well
9:58
with it works great and I love it but
10:00
when it's a lens that it doesn't
10:02
particularly like it's really really bad
10:05
I do love the manual focus confirmation
10:07
something that Mega dap doesn't have I
10:09
like that there's a weather sealed
10:10
option but I think for most people the
10:13
mega dap is probably worth the extra
10:14
money particularly if you plan to use
10:16
extra lenses I'm Dustin Abbott and if
10:19
