Portrait Sessions – the Velcani Family I did a family portrait session with the Velcani’s from Ottawa last month. The weather was, well, very Canadian, with grey skies, cold temperatures, and occasionally spats of very cold rain. They had driven…
We live in a digital age. An age where not only is the photography digital, but the most common way that photography is shared and viewed is through digital means. Many of my wedding or portrait sessions are transacted without…
Canon has been renovating its entire catalog of consumer grade zoom lenses over the past several years to great effect. I’ve used a number of Canon’s previous generation consumer grade zooms, including the 18-55mm kit lens, the 18-135mm and 18-200mm…
I’m launching a new column here called “Killer Apps”. These days photography is about more than just gear; competitive photographers also need to know their way around computers, software, and apps. In this column I will be sharing pieces of…
In photography there are moments when we have “fortunate accidents”; can we also have those with gear purchases? I didn’t originally set out to purchase the Canon EF-M 55-200mm f IS STM telephoto lens. It wasn’t readily available in the…
You’ve probably all been walking through a mall and seen someone demonstrating a little remote control helicopter from a kiosk in the middle of the hallway. Oohs and ahhs are heard as the little copter swoops around and soars like…

The second of Tamron’s stunning new prime lenses is the SP (Super Performance) 35mm f Di VC USD. I’ve been reminded of how much I enjoy shooting with the 35mm focal length during this review, and the combination of great…
Tamron pleasantly surprised many of us by their swift announcement and soon release of a new line of SP (Super Performance) Prime lenses. The “opening salvo” includes a 35mm f VC (Vibration Compensation/Image Stabilizer) along with a somewhat curious 45mm…
I am putting together the finishing touches on my review of the Canon EOS M3 mirrorless body. Canon’s third “kick at the can” in the mirrorless segment has both incredible strengths and puzzling weaknesses, but the images it can produces…
