[Music] hi I'm Dustin Abbott Fuji's X100 Mark 6
0:14
is the camera that broke the internet in 2024 no camera in recent history has been in such high demand and Fuji's new
0:22
xm5 probably won't achieve that same level of populist appeal but it is
0:28
certainly true that it has at least some of the visual uh Vibe and overall style
0:35
that that camera has underneath that retro exterior is a Thoroughly Modern
0:40
camera that is focused on vlogging and content creation however and unlike the
0:46
x16 it will slot in as the least expensive camera in Fuji's current
0:51
lineup at just $799 for the camera body only or
0:57
$899 in kit with this XC 15 to 45 mm lens so the question that we're here to
1:03
answer is this a camera worth choosing over some of the Alternatives like Sony
1:09
zv E10 Mark I that I reviewed last year or the Canon R50 or r10 models or even
1:15
the most recent from Nikon as well well that's what we're going to explore here after a word from our sponsor today's
1:22
episode is sponsored by Inu and their new p63 cougar power bank it seems like
1:27
just about everything can be charged via USB see these days which makes power Banks a regular part of all of our Lives
1:34
I found that being able to charge my camera batteries from a power bank has really save me at times but not all
1:39
power banks have the proper power delivery standard to charge them my secondary complaint is that many of my
1:45
power banks are very slow to charge taking hours to recharge but inu's new p63 cougar solves all of that it has a
1:53
massive 2500 Mah of storage enough to recharge an iPhone 15 nearly five times
1:59
or most of my CA batteries about eight times it can deliver as much as 100 Watts plenty to charge everything from
2:05
my laptop to my iPad Pro what's more the p63 has nearly as much power capacity as
2:10
a vmount battery but costs half as much making it a very cost-effective way to run my lighting for my YouTube channel
2:17
one of my favorite things about the p63 is its ability to fast charge at about 65 Watts meaning that recharge time is
2:24
vastly reduced this little Powerhouse is definitely a part of my workflow now and you can get own from Amazon for under
2:31
$70 by visiting the link in the description below so we'll start by highlighting some of the key upgrades of
2:37
this particular model this has Fuji's 26.1 megapixel apsc XTR 4 Coss sensor uh
2:45
one of the basically two sensors that they employ at this point it has their latest AI assist processing algorithms
2:52
that will allow it to have basically about as good autofocus as you're going to find on most of Fuji's models you
2:59
also have an option to have open gate video at 6.2k at 30 frames per second
3:05
10bit internal recording and of course 4K 60 4K 30 etc etc it has 425 Point AF
3:13
it has AI based subject detection you can get actually up to 30 frames per second in jpeg shooting with a 1.25 crop
3:21
or up to 20 times or 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter without any kind of crop it is
3:28
compatible with Fuji's full full range of X Series lenses and of course many third party lenses at this point it has
3:34
a 3in 1.04 million dot fully articulating touchscreen LCD it has
3:41
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity and then of course you can potentially get it with this lens if you
3:47
so desire so that's the feature list but how does it hold up in the real world and let's talk about the build and
3:53
handling first of all as noted there are some similar Style Elements to Fuji's
3:59
most popular camera including the extremely slim profile this camera is just 38 mm or 1.5 in deep which is at
4:08
least an inch Slimmer than any of the competing camera of course there is a trade-off for that there is almost no
4:14
grip here and so it ends up being a camera that I feel like I end up pinching instead of gripping because
4:20
there's literally no place to curl my fingers around so I don't actually find it particularly comfortable particularly
4:25
for one-handed operation because I feel like I'm putting all the pressure points on uh two fingers here just kind of
4:31
squeezing the camera against my palm to hold it in place there is a decent place for the thumb to go a little protrusion
4:37
back here and that does help a bit but this is a camera that is probably going to be most comfortable shooting with
4:43
smaller and lighter lenses you put heavy lenses on this and it's definitely going to be a case of the tail wagging the dog
4:50
most comfortable is when you can have a lens you just kind of support with your left hand to where you're not having to carry all of the weight with your right
4:57
hand now the reason why I have this kind of loosely on here is I do need to illustrate a point because there is
5:03
basically no grip here that means that there's no option for the battery to be fit in in a vertical fashion here and so
5:10
the battery has to fit long ways in the body this is the mpw 126s battery that's
5:16
in a lot of their models it was in The X 1006 as well or V6 it is rated in this
5:24
instance for 440 shots but that's a little bit deceptive that's in their eco mode and eco mode means you're going
5:31
getting less performance not only in the screen but also in the autofocus system so there probably won't be a lot of
5:36
situations where you're going to want to employ that so if you're just shooting in normal mode it's rated at 330 normal
5:42
shots and so that's probably a more typical rating truth of the matter is it probably exceeds that in most kinds of
5:49
situations but I think the biggest area that you're going to have to worry about battery capacity is if you are shooting
5:55
a lot of either 6K or 4K video you're definitely going to need spares there
6:00
because at best you're going to get about 45 minutes of recording out of that the other thing that I do want to
6:06
highlight here that has been very relevant for me is that I typically like to put these Peak design capture plates
6:12
on all of my cameras you'll see that I've got the Anchor Point attached to it that means I can throw a strap quickly
6:19
on and off without having to do a lot of messing around it and not having it attached all the time it also means because these are ARCA compatible that I
6:26
can throw my cameras right onto a tripod for doing test or for shooting and not have to mess around with adding and
6:31
removing a QR plate every time problem being here is that because the battery
6:37
has to fit you know in the width of the camera it also means that the battery or
6:42
the memory card which is located down here is to the far if I'm holding it here to the far left and so closest to
6:49
the center of the camera which means that there is just no way even if I'm using a small plate like this that I can
6:54
open this door and get either the battery or the memory card out because it literally hinders is right next to
7:00
that attachment point it's a real pain uh because it means that in every case that I want to get at that I've got to
7:07
remove the the QR plate or just not mess with it alt together and so it is my
7:12
least favorite location for a memory card to fit I'm not so concerned about the battery because you can charge the
7:19
battery within the camera but it's a real pain if you need to get that memory card in and out which of course I often
7:25
do as a part of my test the tradeoff for you know that vulnerable ability is that
7:30
the camera is really really Slim and if you had a little tiny pancake lens on here it truly would be a pocketable
7:36
camera uh because you would not need a whole lot of width there and even today I was able to slide it into a jacket
7:42
pocket with a slim lens attached to it the weight here is fairly lightweight
7:47
though maybe not as much as what you might think it weighs 355 G or 12.5 o
7:53
which surprisingly is a little bit heavier than the Sony zve E10 Mark II uh although you know looks metal because of
8:01
the the silver finish it actually is primarily Plastics in the body but there is a little bit of extra heft there
8:06
relative to that however it is lighter than a camera like Canon's r10 so kind
8:12
of fit there in the Middle Ground of the competing type cameras now when it comes to the control scheme this really isn't
8:19
as retro in its design as some of Fuji's other cameras there are some prominent
8:24
dials there on the on the top but really overall I would find I would say that the control scheme here is pretty
8:30
typical you've got a large mode dial there on the front or on the top the camera which is pretty typical on the
8:36
left side you do have something unique to this camera that you're not going to see on other brands and that is because
8:42
Fuji is all in on their film simulations it's one thing that sets them apart from other brands and people tend to really
8:48
like their film simulations and so they're all in in this particular camera and that there is a dial here on the
8:54
left side that is whol dedicated to just being able to select some of the most popular of these film simulations and so
9:01
they're not all on there however there are a number of them on there plus the ability to you know to go to a a custom
9:08
concoction that you've put together in camera now this is is probably only great if
9:15
you are a JPEG shooter the reason why I say that is it really doesn't matter what you selected here if you're
9:21
shooting in raw as I do you get the same raw file either way and so in the first
9:26
case uh here I selected just their standard profile I then move to the velvia
9:32
profile they look identical because for the raw file they actually are the problem I have with this is because this
9:39
is the way that I particularly shoot I then could say okay well I'll use that dial for something else I haven't found
9:45
a way to assign any other value to it so it is going to be kind of um a pointless
9:50
dial for me in most of the time in most situations and ironically in the front
9:55
here there is a command dial and that actually is clickable and when you click
10:01
it it will rotate between three uh it starts off with three default different options and so as you click that in it
10:07
changes the function of that front command dial in this case however one of
10:13
those three basic options in fact was uh having different film simulations which
10:18
seems kind of odd when you've got a whole dial associated with that now fortunately you can customize these menu
10:24
options that when you click it in different things pop up and so you can move it to something else instead or in
10:30
my case I just eliminated one of those alt together because it becomes kind of clunky you can put I think as many as
10:35
four but if you're having to click through four different options every time to get to what you're looking for
10:41
it's just not all that beneficial and so that front control dial is then augmented by a rear control dial here
10:48
that you can assign different values to my least favorite ergonomic thing is the
10:54
Q button which is for the quick menu they've made this little tiny button
10:59
that sits very flush and have located it between two big dials which means that even with your bare fingertip it is not
11:06
easy to depress it's January in Canada right now which means I'm wearing gloves
11:11
when I'm out shooting trying to access that with a glove forget about it it is impossible so that to me is a a serious
11:19
design flaw there one of my least favorite things about the ergonomics here also on the front outside of the
11:24
shutter button is around that shutter button is the switch that will turn the camera on on and off there's also a
11:30
dedicated video record button there though if you are in video mode you can also activate it with the shutter if you
11:37
are so inclined the back of the camera it's a small camera and so I mean it's
11:43
it's not as ergonomically friendly is what I would love but I have a similar complaint with a lot of these type models and so this is no better or no
11:50
worse really than any of them the one thing I will say better is that you do have a little joystick here which I do
11:57
appreciate um because it does give you a control point unfortunately though some of the other models from Sony Nikon or
12:04
Canon they're much more friendly to touch control on the touchcreen and unfortunately there is still very very
12:11
limited touch capacity here you can access that quick menu by touch and then
12:16
if you're in the vlogging mode which we'll get to in a moment there are some onscreen controls that you can activate
12:21
by touch but there's a little bit of lag in touch input it's not as responsive as other models and you cannot navigate any
12:28
kind of the full menu um with a touch but I think even more essential here is
12:34
that you can't quick access any of these things like your fstop or ISO you can't
12:40
just touch those places as you can on most cameras and just pull up a quick touch box as a secondary control and so
12:47
that is something that continues to be lacking in all of Fuji's models at this point now interestingly they have
12:54
located a mic input that is right near the hot shoe on the top that's used
12:59
because it means that if you're connecting something there it is not going to you know conflict with the
13:05
screen flipping out forward likewise any of the ports they've located all on the right side so there is nothing here
13:10
that's obstructing your visibility of the screen all of the top kind of plate
13:16
buttons on the back are quite small there's a drive button there there is a play button and then there is an a AFL
13:23
button a focus hold button that you can access there underneath the joystick down towards the bottom there's a menu
13:29
okay button and a display back button that if you long press will activate your Bluetooth um connectivity now this
13:37
camera does have a headphone monitoring Jack which is welcome I believe that was something that the zve 10 Mark II was
13:43
missing and then you have a USBC Port that is for both data and charging the
13:48
battery and then there is a micro HDMI port I don't love my micro HDMI you
13:54
probably don't either but the reality is is in a tiny camera like this there's just not a lot of real state to put
13:59
anything larger there one of thing that is worth noting here as far as
14:04
connectivity is that this camera is compatible with um with Fuji's it's fan1
14:11
accessory and that will allow you to do actual active cooling of the chassis of
14:16
the camera so if you're you're filming long format it can be really useful there uh for that so far it seems like
14:23
you know the most recent cameras that have a fully articulating screen requires that to access putting that on
14:29
there and so that you can use that so if you've already purchased that for another camera it is compatible here as
14:35
well now I've already lamented the touchcreen a little bit I know that some of you prefer a tilting style I do
14:41
prefer the articulating myself for a number of reasons but either way it is articulating it's a 3-in display and
14:49
unfortunately it's not particularly high resolution it's only 1.04 million dots of resolution that's unfortunate because
14:56
this is your only interaction point on this there is no viewfinder on the camera and so that means that the better
15:03
the screen is the better it's going to be to be able to capture and to see what you're doing the screen is reasonably
15:09
bright but on a bright winter day like this I mean I went out and shot earlier
15:14
with the camera just to catch a few more images on a on a beautiful day and I
15:19
found that I couldn't hardly see the screen at all and so it's either a matter of trying to shade that there's
15:25
been a number of times when it's bright that I'm putting the camera up to a to my eye and there's no viewfinder there
15:31
but again the zve 10 Mark II doesn't have one either I just really miss it your mileage may vary other thing that's
15:37
missing here is any kind of inbody IM image stabilization not really expected in this model you're going to pay
15:43
probably about $500 more to move up to a Fuji model that has embody image stabilization amongst other features and
15:50
so just know that that is lacking here there is some digital stabilization when you're shooting video however you know
15:56
that comes with extreme limitations including a significant crop factor that we'll talk about in a moment I'll take
16:03
just a moment to talk about the kit lens here this is an XC 15 to 45 mm the XC
16:09
models tend to be just a little cheaper in their you know physical design a little more like plastic Fantastics than
16:15
Fuji's other lenses and that includes even having a plastic Mount here however that being said this lens in Kit only
16:22
cost a hundred bucks it costs $300 if you buy it separately so if you're going to want it you're definitely going to want to buy it in kit 100 bucks is not
16:30
much for a lens like this and it does have some some practical value uh for one thing it does have ois or Optical
16:36
image stabilization so if you're wanting to capture video with this camera it gives you a lens that will provide
16:41
stabilization which is going to work much better than a non-stabilized lens the other advantage that it has is this
16:47
is a power zoom lens and so that means that as you rotate the um Zoom dial it
16:54
will mechanically zoom in and out and then so allow you to have uh smoother
16:59
zoom zoom interactions here we'll also note that if you're in Vlog mode the power Zoom can be accessed via the
17:06
screen as well and you can do touchscreen up and down and this I would say most of the time it's actually smoother to do it through the ring
17:12
itself now this is a retrac toal zoom design and so when you power the camera off the inner barrel is going to retract
17:20
but I vastly prefer this to Canon models that require you to First twist before
17:25
the lens can even be usable in this case because it it power out there pretty quickly you're not going to be missing
17:31
shots which I appreciate U which is unlike the the Canon model for sure now
17:37
image quality is well you know it's it's about what you expect it's okay but it's certainly not exceptional you're
17:44
probably going to want an upgrade in image quality if you get serious about shooting particularly for Stills um
17:49
where you know image quality tends to be a little bit more demanding now on the mode dial there is a dedicated Vlog mode
17:56
and that's worth talking about because that's really at the heart of of this particular camera and so you can see here that when you go into Vlog mode it
18:02
opens up a completely different um menu design on screen with some different
18:07
menu options and then if you click the menu button it will populate even more menu options and put them in a frame
18:14
around the outside of the screen itself and so you can access different things that includes uh what is unique to this
18:21
design on the hardware side is it is the first of Fuji's cameras to have additional um microphones built into it
18:28
so there's a total of three different microphones there's four different modes that you can access and and so let's
18:33
take a moment and let's jump into that and let's take a look at if those different recording modes actually make
18:39
a difference okay I'm going to be shooting a little vlogging section here
18:44
and I'm walking through what is deep snow so you may hear some crunch we're going to go through the various options
18:50
that are available for the built-in microphones I'm going to start by uh filming here with what they call the
18:56
surround sound so that should have as much environmental sound as possible and
19:02
we'll try the different modes as we move ahead here so now I'm going to just turn on the front microphone setting and so
19:09
in this case probably should get less environmental sound the goal here is to capture what's happening in front of the
19:16
camera rather than what's going on either around or behind the camera I'm going to switch now to the rear
19:22
microphone setting and so in this case it probably should alter the way that my voice sounds because I am in front of
19:28
rather than behind the camera itself now in the fourth setting which I'll switch to here now this is going to record both
19:36
in front of and behind the camera but not to either side and so produce a
19:42
little bit different effect hopefully so obviously you can definitely tell a difference in the
19:48
various recording modes you're probably going to get your best audio still if you use dedicated audio recording
19:53
devices but at the same time it is good to have some flexibility if you're really into the idea of doing Run and
19:59
Gun another interesting feature that's a part of the vlogging mode is there's actually a shorts mode that doesn't
20:05
require you to rotate the camera for vertical filming it uses that open gate video to provide up to 60-second
20:12
Vertical Clips without rotating the camera so it will show you on screen the various Crop Marks and so you know what
20:17
your framing is going to be like but you can shoot short so 60 seconds or less a Clips through that without having to do
20:24
ro rotation now obviously if you rotate the camera you can shoot longer format if you're wanting to shoot in a vertical
20:30
format but obviously having that you know quick thing is great because it just means that on your tripod
20:36
particularly if you have kind of a limited tripod that doesn't have like a ball head where you can easily rotate it allows you to still get some vertical
20:42
footage useful some other options on there while you're in vog vlogging mode include background defocus that
20:49
background defocus mode basically all it does is it opens up the lens mounted to the largest maximum apture so it will
20:54
blur out the background as much as possible how well that works is really going to depend on the lens you have
20:59
attached and its ability to naturally blur out a background they have a p portrait enhancer mode it has three
21:06
different stages of intensity and it basically is just a smoothing it's going to smooth out skin imperfections and the
21:14
more you the stronger the effect the more plasticky the end result not something I'm a fan of but again your
21:20
mileage may vary it also has a product priority mode which can be really useful if you're demonstrating something on
21:27
camera and so as you if you reach towards the camera kind of showing the object the autofocus knows to prioritize
21:33
whatever is coming out towards the camera and we'll focus on that so probably blur out your face a little bit
21:38
then as you bring the product back it'll probably go back to focusing on your face so again some useful things for
21:44
some people they will be gimmicks but if it seems really gimmicky you might want to look at a different camera model
21:50
because that really is some of the inherent strengths of this lens is a little more dedication to content Creation in its various forms now on the
21:58
auto aut Focus side of things this is basically the same autofocus system that we have been seeing for a long time uh
22:06
since the xt3 425 AF points it is the same Basic Hardware however their
22:12
xpressor 5 does add AI deep learning for better tracking and better subject
22:17
recognition of a variety of things and I would say on the plus side
22:23
I think Fuji in this most recent iteration and firmware updates on some of their other cameras
22:29
they are getting better in terms of eye recognition and tracking and consistency of focus at least for Stills uh I
22:37
definitely see better there I do have one ongoing complaint and that is for some reason Fuji continues to separate
22:45
human eye detection from any other subject detection and so you have to access it in basically two different
22:50
menus which means that if you're mapping it to a button or some kind of quick access point you actually have to map to
22:56
two separate things because one will take you to the different options for
23:01
eye Focus whether it's Auto or if it's focusing on the right or the left eye and then you have to go to the other
23:08
place to you know determine whether or not you want it to look for animal subjects or you know planes cars you
23:15
know automobiles you know etc etc so there's a variety of things that it can recognize and track at this point but
23:21
it's a little bit clunky still at getting to it some of the competing cameras have you know enabled a an auto
23:27
mode where the camera will automatically detect what is being tracked and those modes in my experience tend to work
23:33
quite well overall I think that Stills is getting better I I don't think it's as good when you introduce action into
23:41
the seam it's not going to just focus as quickly when you're shooting action but uh overall I would say instills my
23:47
accuracy is good at this point for portraits I'm having no problems and that's with a variety of lenses so they
23:54
have made strides in that area video however is still a little bit rough
23:59
around the edges there is some improvement so for example let's take a look at static shots kind of what I'm
24:04
doing right now and I'll talk to you about that for a moment and doing it while filming on this camera one of the
24:09
things I've not been able to do over the years is to trust my Fuji cameras for recording my video sections and the
24:17
reason is is that often Focus just doesn't say stable enough in those kinds of situations for me to fully rely upon
24:24
it and obviously that's something incredibly important I don't have time to re-shoot episodes again and again and
24:30
so here we're doing a a sample test I've got just the forward video mic recording
24:36
and we're seeing how that it does with the new XF 16 to 55 mm f2.8 Mark 2 lens
24:44
which should be one of the best lenses available at the moment we'll see how it's doing for recording this in terms
24:49
of being solid and staying locked on my eye and not being distracted during this segment and so you can see for that
24:55
particular shot no problem it stayed locked on me there was no hunting or pulsing it did fine on that I also noted
25:04
that it did fairly good when I was doing a selfie mode type vlogging and walking along let's take a look at that okay and
25:11
a secondary test here I've got we're just going to see how we're doing as far as tracking my eye this is just using
25:18
the kit lens the XC 15 to 45 mm so we're going to see how it does as I move
25:24
through a slight bit of varying lighting conditions just to see how good it stays locking onto my eye now of course in
25:31
this case depth the field is not super shallow this lens has at this point a
25:37
maximum aperture of f3.5 and so we're not having a tiny depth of field but at
25:43
the same time it does have to obviously stay locked on my eye so far as far as what I'm seeing on the box the Box will
25:49
occasionally switch from eye to eye but at least it is staying pretty consistently locked on an eye for
25:56
vlogging obviously that's going to be an important thing so in that situation obviously there's less kind of back and
26:02
forth type fluctuations I'm going to as I duck and move my head there's mild uh fluctuations but it's not any kind of
26:08
major change it's mostly a static distance between the camera and the subject myself where Things Fall Apart
26:14
is when something starts to actually approach the camera and so here is yet
26:19
another example to illustrate that okay and this shot I'm going to emerge from behind the tree and then move towards
26:25
the camera we'll see how it does in picking me up and tracking me as I move along so obviously that last segment is
26:32
a pretty huge fail and and that is where it really illustrates how far behind
26:38
particularly for video Fuji still is they still need a lot of work when I do Focus pulls I'm still far more likely to
26:45
see visible steps in the process less certainty the touchcreen is still
26:50
sometimes unresponsive if I want to click to move Focus to somewhere else sometimes it doesn't react at all and
26:56
then sometimes it reacts fairly quickly it's just really inconsistent it's better but it's still the weak area I
27:03
would say for this particular camera now shutter here is pretty decent um the on
27:08
the negative side the mechanical shutter it does have a full mechanical shutter so that's good however it is limited at
27:15
only up to 8 frames per second some of the competing cameras will do at least 11 and maybe even up to 15 in mechanical
27:22
mode uh upper upper shutter limit is 1/ 4,000th of a second when using the mechanical shutter you can have however
27:28
switch to an electronic shutter and so that gets you up to 133,000 of a second in terms of your shutter speed um and it
27:36
will allow you to shoot up to 20 frames per second with the full readout now there is some limitations to that you're
27:42
not going to get as good of dynamic range images just image quality isn't quite as good and because there is um
27:50
you know because it's not really super fast and it's readout you will run into the potential of getting some rolling
27:55
shutter some objects that kind of exagger ated or distorted if you're kind of panning across t a fast action you
28:02
can get even up to 30 frames per second if you switch into the sport crop mode that does crop it down and so to a 1.25
28:10
times crop so your image size is going to be a little bit smaller um a little lower resolution however you can if you
28:17
really need to get really fast Burst you can uh get up to 30 frames per second I
28:22
do like a a um something that Fuji has and that you can go into kind of a hybrid mode to where where underneath a
28:29
certain shutter limit you'll get full mechanical shutter and then it will automatically switch to the electronic
28:34
mode and so that you can get faster shots if you're shooting with a bright lens for example I went out with the 56
28:40
mm f1.2 earlier today and in bright Sun it would automatically switch into that electronic shutter and so that I could
28:46
get a you know a I could actually control the shutter speed to where I could get adequate metering even in
28:53
bright situations now I I kind of Hit the X100 V6 a bit because it had some limitations
29:01
or VI I should say x16 I it had some limitations to the buffer depth this model is helped by the
29:08
fact that although it just has uh UHS one compatible SD card which is slow by
29:14
modern standards the fact that it has the smaller 26 megapixel sensor instead of the 40 megapixel sensor helps a lot
29:21
and so buer buffer depth is not bad here on the best end of the spectrum you can
29:27
get as many as 100 73 jpegs that's if you're shooting in mechanical mode at 8 frames per second if you shoot in that
29:33
electronic mode at 20 frames per second it drops to 127 um jpegs it's because you know it's
29:40
that buffer can't handle that more rapid amount of data coming into it if you're shooting in raws if you're shooting
29:47
compressed raws you can get as many as 82 compressed raws again that's at at the eight frames per second and or as
29:54
little as 60 uh frames per or 60 uh compressed raws if you're shooting at
30:00
the faster 20 frames per second now if you're shooting lossless compressed raw which is my preferred file format you're
30:07
going to get as much as only 38 and as little as 34 so obviously you're much more restricted when you get to that
30:14
point so it's it's fine for capturing you know small burst of action but this is not a sports camera and you know
30:21
maybe it's the only camera you have and use it for whatever you need to but know that it's not going to be the best
30:26
option particularly since it's doesn't have a viewfinder it can be hard to track action particularly in difficult
30:32
light without a viewfinder but overall as far as the actual buffer depth I've definitely seen worse and so I I give it
30:39
fairly good marks on that front let's talk about video now the unique thing here is that unlike a lot of competitors
30:46
you can shoot up to 6.2k I need to qualify that a little bit that is 6.2
30:51
open gate and so open gate means that it is shooting the whole sensor and that means it's shooting with the the typical
30:58
crop factor which is 32 and so it's shooting more like you would a still image and you can get that whole footage
31:05
and what you can do later if you're wanting to get to the widescreen 169 or some other type crop you have to crop it
31:11
in post so I don't want you to think that you're getting 6K video in 169
31:17
that's not true but you are getting that open gate uh footage where you can crop that down in a variety of ways including
31:24
vertically which is where it can be useful you can get full 10 bit internal recording on that and so that can be
31:31
very very useful 4K 60 you can shoot that you will get a bit of a crop at
31:36
that a 1.18 times crop factor if you're shooting 4K 60 if you're shooting 4K 30
31:42
you will get it with no crop now in full HD you can shoot as fast as 240 frames
31:48
per second if you're wanting to do serious slow-mo footage it will include a lot of the modern high-end features
31:55
like f log 2 you can do hlg for high dynamic range footage and as noted you
32:01
can use a digital stabilizer that works okay but it will come with a big crop
32:06
factor as much as 1.44 times of crop depending on what mode that you're shooting in and so obviously that's
32:13
you're going to have to be shooting with much wider lenses than what you might want for your actual shot if you're going to use that digital
32:20
stabilization probably a better option is to actually just get a motorized gimbal this camera is really lightweight
32:27
so you can buy relatively cheap one and thus you're going to get much better stabilization if you're plan on getting
32:33
shots on the Move Fuji's footage is good and of course you have the ability if you want if you're not shooting in a log
32:39
that you can you know put one of their film simulations and get a unique look maybe match the look of your footage to
32:45
the look of some Stills you're going to take as a part of a project so all of that I find to be very useful and as is
32:52
per usual you get nicely detailed looking footage out of the camera itself it also seems to do quite well in heat
32:58
dissipation and so they do have a like a long format mode that's designed to hit
33:04
overheating but the truth of matter is unless you're using an external power source you're probably likely to either
33:10
run out into a dead battery or a memory card that is reached its full capacity
33:15
um before you're going to actually overheat so not a major problem there finally let's talk about the overall
33:22
sensor performance I'm going to actually give you more of a sensor overview here the truth of the matter is that I've
33:27
already reviewed this sensor a half dozen times before another camera so there's nothing new Under the Sun here
33:33
this is a 26 megapixel xtran sensor the resolution is
33:38
6,240 by 4,160 pixels and so a good amount of
33:43
resolution you know not off the charts but it it equals the highest resolution Point that's available from Sony at this
33:50
point and so a very nice and useful amount of resolution there it has a base
33:56
ISO in this sensor of 160 and so their 40 megapixel sensor gets you down to 125
34:02
and so um you know and obviously some of the competing cameras will go as low as ISO 100 so that is to me is a little bit
34:09
of a a liability there but the iso range is 160 to 12,800 what I have found with this
34:15
sensor in repeated test is that it's actually really good when it comes to ISO performance I would say that that's
34:21
one area where the Fuji sensor is ahead of Sony sensor and throughout the native
34:26
range up to 12,000 800 I feel like it really does quite good and the there's
34:31
going to be noise but there isn't any obvious color um banding or things like
34:36
that and so overall delivers quite clean results and I haven't hesitated sometimes to shoot at very high isos
34:42
with these cameras now when it comes to the dynamic range this is an area where Fuji sensors are not at the level of
34:49
what Sony is at and so uh Sony is about a half stop better in terms of dynamic range but this is you know it's not like
34:57
completely out of the ballpark like some of Canon sensors used to be and so it's not bad there and of course if you're
35:04
wanting to get a little bit more dynamic range in a single shot you have the option if you put the iso up to 3 320
35:11
you can select what they call dr200 and yes it's it's Electronics um
35:16
but what it's going to do is it's going to sample the highlights from the base ISO
35:21
one60 and it's going to get the shadow information from the higher ISO 320 so
35:26
what that means is you're getting a little bit more exposure in the shadows but less exposure in the highlights and so it just means you have more to play
35:32
with when you're processing and if you go up to ISO 600 excuse me ISO 640 you
35:38
can get their Dr 400 and so that's actually sampling two stops above base ISO and then keeping base ISO for the
35:44
highlights again very very useful in that regard and so um I actually do
35:50
often shoot when I'm shooting Landscapes I I most likely shoot in dr200 when shooting Fuji cameras cuz I like having
35:56
just a little bit of head room to work with particularly in recovering Skies now I do find that the xtran sensor is
36:03
it is more complicated to sharpen and so I I find that in comparative side by side I can get sharper looking results
36:10
out of a Sony camera than I could out of a Fuji camera or a Canon camera over a Fuji etc etc some people love the
36:17
x-trans sensor and you know claim its virtues I'm I'm not as much of a fan but
36:22
again your mileage may vary there I would say the real magic of this camera
36:27
when it comes to image quality is going to be for those of you that shoot jpegs it is there's a wide variety of film
36:33
simulations and they have added some of the most recent ones incling including reala Ace one that I really really love
36:40
and so you can have 20 different film simulations um that are base simulations
36:45
and then you can tweak any of them to a to further to a look that you like you can add or eliminate grain you can
36:51
change the the Shadow or highlight information a little bit and so bottom line is if you spend some time tweaking
36:58
you can really get a look that you like right in your jpegs and so if you're someone that wants to just shoot images
37:04
get them in camera and then not mess with them in post-processing this is a great camera if you don't want to edit
37:10
and that is I think the real strength of Fuji system in general and I will say of
37:16
the xm5 as well so that leads me to my conclusion the Fujifilm xm5 it feels a
37:24
lot like some of Fuji's other you know cheaper camera models there's not anything here that's necessarily
37:30
revolutionary however but I think the pivot to the vlogging features does all
37:36
it was a clever move it allows this camera to have its own unique Niche where it's set apart from uh from some
37:43
other cameras in general but also some of Fuji's other cameras so rather than this this just being the cheapest camera
37:49
that they sell which is where it OCC where it stands as far as the you know their hierarchy of pricing but it also
37:56
now is a dedicated camera that is unique it's Unique in that it has the vlogging specific features those extra microphone
38:02
settings the vlogging menu and the options there and so I think that that pivot was smart for them because it
38:08
gives the xm5 a unique identity other than just being small and cheap Fuji's
38:14
biggest disadvantage remains their autofocus that despite making strides it
38:19
always seems like they're just behind everyone else their biggest strength is
38:24
their color science and that huge range now of apsc specific lenses from both
38:30
first and third parties at this stage you know no one is doing APC development
38:36
like Fuji is and the fact that now you can get a wide variety of thirdparty lenses at a huge variety of price points
38:43
and many of them by the way work really really well you know I think it makes the Fuji platform really attractive if
38:49
you're looking at it just from an apsc perspective if you're someone who says I want apsc that's all I'm ever going to
38:55
shoot I'm never going to full frame well the truth the matter is that all the other brands they kind of augment their
39:00
apsc space with the argument that you know what if you want this particular focal length there's a full-frame lens
39:06
that covers that problem is of course is fullframe lenses are going to be unnecessarily large and and heavy and so
39:12
in this case you can get smaller lighter lenses and you know lenses for example like their new uh 16 to 55 mm f2.8 Mark
39:20
I I use that a lot during my review time fantastic lens and tremendously smaller
39:26
than any kind of equivalent Zoom you're going to get um on other brands that you
39:32
know most likely you're going to have to go to a full-frame lens so anyway I think that they do have some net advantages it's priced well can deliver
39:39
good image quality um but you're going to have to realize you know no viewfinder so you're going to have to
39:45
live with that and also realize that autofocus particularly for a video isn't going to be maybe quite as good as what
39:51
it is on some other brands I'm Dustin Abbott and if you want more information you can check out my full text review
39:56
it's linked in the description down below there's also linkage to an image gallery if you just want to look at some photos as always thanks for watching
