>> Hello everybody. I'm Dustin Abbott. It's
0:12
been a while since I have done an e-bike
0:14
review, so I'm looking forward to
0:15
checking out one from a brand that I've
0:18
never reviewed before. This is Enns
0:20
Wheel and this is going to be their new
0:21
city S model. You can see that the
0:24
package itself is relatively compact.
0:26
I'm going to time lapse here and pop it
0:28
open, assemble it, and so you can see
0:30
and I can see just what is involved in
0:32
putting this bike together and how long
0:34
it is that it before I can get it on the
0:36
road. Let's dive in. Let's take a look.

>> All right, I have the bike assembled and
0:59
I wanted to give you a little bit of
1:00
feedback on the actual installation
1:01
process. First of all, I will say this.
1:03
There was more to actually assemble than
1:06
what I'm accustomed to with these
1:08
e-bikes. I would say that there was the
1:09
most assembly required of this of any of
1:11
the models I've tested before. If you're
1:13
someone who has very, very low kind of
1:15
assembly experience, I mean, you can
1:17
follow the directions and they're pretty
1:20
decent. One thing that I ran into that
1:23
maybe it was just me being dumb.
1:24
However, one of the very first things
1:25
that you're doing as far as installing
1:28
the handlebar,
1:30
it out of the box the handlebar comes
1:32
with the front forks reversed and so I
1:34
actually did all the handlebar assembly,
1:35
got to start and installing like the
1:37
light and realized that the connection
1:39
point for the fender was pointing in the
1:41
wrong direction. So I had to disassemble
1:43
the handlebars, take the reflector back
1:45
off, and reverse things around properly.
1:48
So maybe that might help you in terms of
1:49
things to watch out for.
1:52
Couple of other things that I did
1:53
notice. Now, you may have noticed I
1:55
actually installed
1:57
non-stock pedals here. I want to be able
1:59
to clip into them. I bought these pedals
2:01
for another e-bike. They didn't fit that
2:02
one. They did fit this one. And so
2:04
anyway, I'm going to experiment with
2:06
those on this. I like the fact that the
2:08
battery is removable and so you use the
2:10
key for that. As you probably saw, I
2:12
took the battery away so I could get it
2:13
charging and then get moving ahead with
2:15
that. But I did take it out just for a a
2:19
spin first without any battery and
2:21
without any electric assist. I just
2:23
wanted to see how it rode as a bike
2:24
itself. And also that allows me to do
2:26
some of my final adjustments when it
2:27
comes to seat and a handle position to
2:30
make sure that everything is roadworthy
2:31
before I actually go out on the road.
2:33
And so um I made a few tweaks to that.
2:36
But I will actually say, you know, some
2:37
of the e-bikes that I reviewed because
2:39
they have those big fat tires, they're
2:40
not much fun to ride as just basic
2:42
bikes. This isn't bad. It's you know,
2:45
I've got a high-end road bike. It's not
2:46
that. But it rides fairly nicely even
2:49
and it's very ridable even without
2:51
electric assist. And so if you run out
2:52
of battery, uh you can actually ride
2:54
this this battery or this bike pretty
2:56
reasonably. So So next stage, I'm going
2:59
to actually change for an actual ride.
3:01
I'm going to lube the chain before I go
3:03
out and uh actually install the battery
3:05
pack and then I'll give you feedback
3:07
after I've taken a ride. All right,
3:09
let's take a quick look at the overall
3:10
specs. I'm going to do my best to verify
3:13
and test as many of many of these as
3:15
possible. But to give you a look at what
3:17
the manufacturer claims, we have in this
3:19
U-City S version, which is an upgraded
3:22
from the previous U-City version, we
3:24
have a larger motor. It's rated up to
3:26
1,000 W 65 N-m
3:30
and that's a maximum rating as we're
3:33
going to find. Um it is a claimed top
3:36
speed up to 35 km/h or 22 mph.
3:40
The battery itself is integrated into
3:43
the frame, but it is fully removable and
3:45
you get a couple of keys to help you to
3:48
um to easily unlock and to remove that
3:52
battery. And so you can either just uh
3:55
replace it if you want to have a couple
3:56
of them, or you can take it out to
3:58
charge it, you know, maybe charge it
4:00
indoors and get it out of some harsher
4:02
weather. So anyway, that's integrated in
4:04
that. The battery is rated at 36 volts
4:06
and has a capacity of 466 watt hours,
4:10
which is 12.75
4:12
amp hours of battery. They claim a
4:15
charge time of about 6 to 7 hours.
4:18
Obviously, the charger is included. It
4:21
The battery itself does have an IPX4 uh
4:24
rating, and so that means it is
4:25
resistant to rain and splashing and kind
4:28
of the things you would typically uh
4:29
experience while riding. It's not
4:31
designed to be fully submerged, however.
4:33
We have a fairly standard Shimano
4:34
7-speed shifter here. There is a rear
4:38
rack that can carry up to 80 lb it's
4:40
rated for, and there is an attachment
4:42
bracket at the front if you want to add
4:44
a front-mounted rack. If you really want
4:46
to lean into um delivery or um use it
4:50
for commuting and carrying a little bit
4:51
more gear. We do have a fairly decent
4:53
front suspension on it, making the bike
4:55
ride pretty nice. We have mechanically
4:57
actuated disc brakes front and rear. The
5:01
overall weight of the bike is right
5:03
under 60 lb, 59 and 1/2 lb or 27 kg. The
5:07
max load that's rated for is 120 kg or
5:11
265 lb. Remember, that's rider and
5:14
whatever gear you have on uh the rear
5:17
rack or if you add on a front rack. Bear
5:19
that in mind. Tire size, I actually
5:21
really like this. They're 26 in
5:23
diameter, 1.95 in in width. And uh this
5:27
to me is a kind of a sweet spot for a
5:30
tire if you're wanting to do some mixed
5:31
use. It's not, you know, it's not a dirt
5:34
bike or trail rated, but you for most of
5:36
your commuting, even if you're on like
5:38
gravel type paths, which is what I
5:39
primarily tested on, along with, you
5:41
know, road travel, it it is These are
5:43
nice tires for that. Price is currently
5:46
889 Canadian dollars. That is on sale at
5:50
the moment, but it seems like sales run
5:51
pretty frequently for that, making this
5:53
a pretty strong value for what you're
5:55
getting in the overall package. Okay,
5:58
I'm about to go out to test the range
6:00
test on the bike here. The battery is
6:04
charged to 100%. The temperature is
6:07
about 27° C,
6:10
right around 80° F.
6:12
What I primarily do on rides like this
6:15
I'm interested in testing it for my own
6:16
use case. And so my use case, I want to
6:18
pedal hard, but I also want to move
6:20
along at a good pace on the trail that
6:22
I'm going to. So that means I'm going to
6:24
set it at the highest setting to where
6:26
I'll be able to sustain a 20 mph speed,
6:29
which is its top speed, but I'm going to
6:30
try to do as much as that I can through
6:33
pedaling. I'm going to pause at the
6:35
midpoint when the battery tells me it's
6:37
depleted about 50%. I'll do a quick
6:39
check-in with you at that point, and
6:41
then we'll see how accurate that is, and
6:43
if I can actually make it all the way
6:45
back home um on the remaining state of
6:47
charge. Okay, I am at a little over the
6:50
halfway point. Right now I have gone 20
6:54
km, about 14 miles. The battery pack a
6:59
display here just went from three bars
7:01
down to two bars, but if I check the
7:04
actual app, I'm right under 40%. So in
7:06
theory, I wouldn't have enough to get
7:08
all the way back to my house on battery
7:10
assist. However, I do think I've had a
7:12
bit of a headwind in getting to this
7:13
point, but all I got to do now is to
7:16
ride it out and see going at the same
7:18
kind of pace under the same kind of
7:20
conditions if I have enough battery to
7:22
get me all the way back home. If it
7:24
doesn't, I'll report to you at the end
7:26
at just how far I did get.
7:28
Okay, I have finished up the ride, and
7:30
so according to my
7:33
GPS, I did a little over right over 40
7:35
km. According to the odometer on this, I
7:38
was right under 28 miles. So I got home,
7:42
and I still had power and I'll give you
7:45
a couple of caveats on that. So,
7:46
arriving home, it showed me initially
7:48
right under 10% battery life left.
7:52
However, right now after sitting for a
7:53
few minutes, it's now showing 16 and it
7:56
actually as I'm watching it's gone up to
7:58
17%. And so as the battery cools off,
8:01
you gain a little bit more capacity out
8:03
of it. Bottom line is that under this
8:05
circumstance at the top five assist with
8:08
only mild grades to climb,
8:10
I would say that you probably can get
8:13
between 40 and 50 km max under those
8:16
conditions. Okay, we're going to do
8:18
another range test today. I was a little
8:20
disappointed by what I got on the last
8:22
one compared to what the rated
8:25
range was and so today I'm going to try
8:27
just working at level three, no higher
8:29
than that and so it means I'm going to
8:30
have to work harder, maybe not move
8:32
quite as fast or get quite as far, but
8:35
we'll see how well the range holds up
8:37
over the course of this ride. And so
8:39
just to give you an update on weather
8:41
conditions today, it is mostly sunny
8:44
outside. It is 81°
8:46
Fahrenheit. So just a little bit warmer
8:48
than our previous ride. I'll check back
8:50
in at midpoint again and then at the
8:52
end.
8:53
Okay, I'm at the halfway point and so
8:55
I'm at right under 15 miles and so
8:59
working on uh at this stage close to 25
9:03
km. And so uh taking a look at I take
9:07
pause here for a about 3 minutes at this
9:11
point and so currently the app is
9:12
showing me at 47% capacity. And so
9:17
obviously a little bit better than what
9:18
I was. Now, I did make one change at
9:21
when I was at level three, it basically
9:23
was not hardly using the assist from the
9:25
battery at all. It was basically all
9:27
just me pedaling. So under that
9:29
circumstance, sure you could go a long
9:30
way. So I moved up to level four. So I'm
9:33
not at the level what I was on my
9:34
previous ride, so using a little bit
9:36
less battery energy And that's reflected
9:38
so far. I've been riding into a
9:39
headwind, and obviously I've gotten
9:41
farther with more battery capacity than
9:43
what I did the other day. We'll see how
9:45
it is going back, and I'll give it a
9:46
little bit of time at the end to see
9:48
what the battery is showing. It seems
9:51
like it's going to level off at about 47
9:53
or 48% at this point. So, I'll do the
9:56
rest of the ride, and then I'll give you
9:58
an update at the end. All right, I am
10:00
finished with the ride, and it ended up
10:01
being 29.4
10:04
mi, and so right around 49 km. And so,
10:09
at the moment, I have it says 19%
10:12
battery left, and so probably by the
10:14
time it finishes the cooling off, it'll
10:16
be at around 20% or slightly higher. And
10:20
so, that tells me that under that
10:22
circumstance of the ride today, I
10:24
probably could get 60, 65
10:28
maybe 70 km, but I doubt it. And one
10:31
thing I will point out is that even for
10:34
probably the last about 10, 15 minutes
10:36
of the ride,
10:38
it definitely was throttling back, and
10:40
so I it wasn't uh if I needed it to main
10:43
help to maintain the speed, it wasn't
10:46
maintaining it completely. Um if if you
10:48
tried to use the throttle to accelerate
10:50
or for climbing grades, my ride today
10:52
did have a quite a bit more grades, and
10:54
it doesn't help you a whole lot on
10:56
grades. A bit, but not a whole lot, and
10:58
definitely there's less of that towards
11:00
the end. So, it definitely to help to
11:02
preserve some range, there's some
11:04
techniques that it uses to help that.
11:06
And so, as far as getting the the
11:08
maximum performance out of it, I would
11:10
say that you might get around 40 km at
11:13
the level four, maybe a bit less.
11:17
Probably extend that out and get 60-plus
11:19
km, but I don't really see a
11:22
circumstance where you're going to get
11:23
anywhere near the 100-plus km range that
11:26
is claimed from it. Your mileage may
11:28
vary, obviously, but I've tried multiple
11:30
times now, and I don't think I'm getting
11:32
anywhere near that. So, let's talk about
11:34
some things that I like and some things
11:35
that I don't like. I've now been had the
11:37
opportunity to take a number of extended
11:39
rides on it and test it in a variety of
11:41
situations. And so, here's the things
11:43
that I think really works well. This is
11:45
actually a really nice riding bike. It
11:47
has a very upright seating position. It
11:50
uh runs quite smoothly and quiet
11:52
quietly. There's not a lot of chassis
11:54
rattles to it. Uh suspension um seems to
11:56
absorb most of the bumps that I
11:58
encountered nice and smoothly. And so, I
12:00
didn't feel like my teeth were rattling
12:01
on it. It was a nice smooth ride. I also
12:04
think it's a very nice looking bike. It
12:06
has kind of a retro aesthetic to it.
12:08
But, what I particularly like is the
12:10
kind of the two-tone here with the uh
12:13
brown tan look on the seat and then the
12:15
matching handlebars uh grips there. Both
12:18
of that those are really really nice. I
12:20
like the integrated um
12:23
battery design because if you look at
12:24
this bike, I think you would have to
12:26
kind of take a double take to actually
12:28
determine it's an e-bike because a quick
12:30
look at it, it just looks like a
12:31
bicycle. And so, I think that that's
12:33
really nice. I did enjoy the slimmer
12:36
tires. I still found that it had a
12:37
reasonable amount of grip on the trails
12:39
that I was on. And it just made for a
12:41
much nicer ride than the fat tire bikes,
12:43
which so many of these e-bikes uh tend
12:45
to have. One of the things that really
12:47
stood out to me is the actual handlebar
12:49
grips as far as their angle for your
12:51
wrist and also the way that they're
12:53
designed for eliminating fatigue and
12:55
numbness in your hands. These are of the
12:58
stock included the best that I've used
13:00
on any of the e-bikes that I've tested.
13:02
And so, that really stood out to me as
13:04
being an extreme plus. Even in a 50-km
13:07
ride, I had no issues with numbness or
13:09
my hands getting fatigued on it. So,
13:11
kudos to them on that design. It may
13:13
seem like a small thing, but as far as
13:15
the practicality of it, I actually
13:16
really found that I liked the
13:18
positioning of the uh pedal assist and
13:22
uh being able to go with an easy thumb
13:23
position up and down. I found that it
13:25
was really easy to access. That's not
13:27
been true on all the e-bikes I've
13:28
tested. Some of them are not easy to get
13:30
to. You have to be really like thought
13:32
conscious, which means you're looking
13:33
down, which means you're not looking at
13:35
the road. In this case, it's very easy
13:37
to tell by feel and it's in a very good
13:39
position to where you don't really have
13:40
to move your hands much. Just bring that
13:42
thumb up and adjust up and down. That is
13:44
really, really great. Well, obviously,
13:46
this isn't the world's highest-end
13:48
braking system. It is, I think,
13:50
sufficient for the bike and its speed,
13:52
which I can't say for a lot of the
13:54
e-bikes that I've tested. And so, I felt
13:56
like the brake quality and not just the
13:59
amount of stopping power, but the
14:00
overall feel of the brakes was pretty
14:02
good. And so, I'll give them some credit
14:04
on that front. It is reasonably
14:06
lightweight. It's under 60 lb, so this
14:08
is a more practical bike for if you're
14:10
wanting to use it as a commuter bike or
14:13
to mount it onto an RV or into a truck
14:17
or things like that. So, I think that
14:18
that is well done. I like the fact that
14:20
we have a removable battery.
14:22
I wish they had on their website easily
14:26
accessible additional batteries just on
14:29
the accessory list to where you could
14:30
see a price and have that as an option
14:33
and be able to swap that out and just
14:35
not have any kind of range anxiety when
14:37
it comes to the battery. And so, but the
14:39
battery itself, I like the integrated
14:41
design and I like the fact that it is
14:42
removable, lockable, and so that you can
14:45
take it away and charge it separately.
14:47
For a commuter style bike, I do like the
14:49
inclusion of fenders on both tires and
14:51
so you're not eating spray all the time.
14:53
And also, the rear rack. And if you want
14:55
to get even more use out of that, they
14:57
do sell purpose-designed panniers or
15:00
saddle bags to go on the back and so
15:02
that you can store things in that. I
15:04
found that the display, while it's not
15:07
particularly complex and it doesn't have
15:08
a ton of information, I did find that it
15:10
was easy to see and that was true even
15:12
when wearing polarized sunglasses. I
15:14
also found that the gearing was decent
15:16
on this bike. My one of my biggest
15:18
critiques of e-bikes is that often the
15:20
gearing doesn't go,
15:22
you know, either low enough or high
15:23
enough depending on how you're
15:25
perceiving it to where when you're
15:27
riding at speed, sometimes it feels like
15:29
your your legs there's no resistance and
15:31
so it makes you feel a little bit out of
15:32
control. I didn't feel like that at all
15:34
while riding this bike. The only time I
15:35
ever felt like that where I was kind of
15:37
just spinning my tires is when I was
15:39
coming down a very steep hill and going
15:41
way too fast for the actual gearing.
15:44
That's understandable. I found that to
15:45
be true even on my high-end road bike
15:47
sometimes and so I felt like the gearing
15:49
was pretty nicely executed on that. I
15:51
also like the integrated kickstand. It's
15:53
nicely executed and it doesn't rattle
15:56
while I'm riding the bike which is
15:57
something that has driven me crazy with
15:59
just bikes in general in the past that
16:01
sometimes it's really hard to get rid of
16:02
that rattle. This is a nice sturdy
16:04
kickstand but it doesn't get in the way
16:06
and doesn't rattle while you're riding.
16:08
So a lot of stuff that I actually really
16:10
like about the bike. So let's talk about
16:12
some of the things that I don't like.
16:14
I think that a lot of my critiques of
16:16
this bike come down to what is
16:20
over inflated claims by the
16:21
manufacturer. And so that comes down to
16:23
for example that when it comes to
16:25
acceleration, this bike is neither as
16:28
fast on its top end but probably more
16:30
importantly for a lot of you, it's not
16:32
as fast in acceleration. And so you do
16:34
have the option of using the twist
16:36
throttle to accelerate with the bike as
16:38
long as you have some level of assist
16:40
turn on but I find that there's not a
16:42
ton of thrust there and that's
16:43
particularly true as you get towards the
16:46
end of the range if you've been riding
16:48
for a long time. Um just to preserve
16:51
range as they still have some degree of
16:53
electric assist, it definitely will
16:54
throttle back as you go and so you get
16:56
less and less thrust off of the actual
16:59
throttle itself. And so I just find that
17:02
in terms of acceleration, it's
17:03
definitely not up to the level of some
17:05
of the other bikes that I have tested. I
17:07
also found that it had less torque for
17:09
climbing grades. And so that all points
17:12
to me the fact that the specs for this
17:14
motor, they tend to be very generous.
17:16
1,000 watts, I I'm sure there's some
17:19
optimal condition where that's probably
17:21
true, but I would say that in terms of
17:23
performance, it feels a lot more like a
17:25
500 watt bike in terms of my estimation.
17:29
I also found that, you know, despite my
17:31
kind of best efforts, I don't think I
17:33
got anywhere near the maximum range. I
17:35
think to achieve that kind of range, you
17:37
would have to be working with a very low
17:40
level of assist, which means most of the
17:41
time you would be doing the pedaling and
17:43
maybe just using some assist when you
17:45
were going up a grade, for example. And
17:47
so, I mean, if you're using it in that
17:49
capacity, maybe you would get somewhere
17:51
near the 100 km, but in terms of the way
17:54
I think most people use these e-bikes,
17:56
you're going to get far less than that.
17:58
If you're using probably the pure
18:00
throttle, you're going to get under 40
18:01
km range. And even with the, you know,
18:04
hybrid to where I was using a decent
18:06
level of assist, but pedaling very fast,
18:08
trying to continuously move fast with
18:10
the bike,
18:11
I would say my maximum range that I
18:13
could achieve might be around 60 km. And
18:16
so, I just didn't find that either the
18:17
claim of the power nor the battery specs
18:20
quite lived up to my expectation when it
18:22
came to the marketing on the bike
18:24
itself. I was also a little disappointed
18:26
to have just a cheap bell here as
18:28
opposed to having an integrated horn. A
18:30
lot of bikes I've tested have had
18:31
integrated horns, and so, anyway, that's
18:33
just something I would have liked to
18:35
have seen upgraded on the design itself.
18:38
I also found that the seat is um it's
18:42
not hard to adjust, but it is hard to
18:44
adjust it tight enough to where it just
18:46
stops moving. There's no pin to actually
18:48
lock it in any position, and so, under
18:51
hard riding, I found that the seat did
18:53
still move on me a little bit. I did
18:55
notice when I went through the user
18:57
reviews on the I sin wheel site that
18:58
there were other people that complained
19:00
about that, and so, it's not just me. I
19:02
also didn't like the fact that I never
19:04
could find a setting for the speedometer
19:06
that actually showed me a true speed
19:08
setting. It basically showed me up to
19:11
the the max range that was set in the
19:13
pedal assist, but didn't show anything
19:15
higher than that. And and so it as far
19:17
if you're wanting to gauge how fast
19:19
you're actually going, it's of limited
19:20
value for that. And so another little
19:23
critique that I had there. So what's my
19:25
conclusion? Well, the Izen Wheel Use
19:27
City S is a in a lot of ways it is a
19:30
great bike. If you're buying it really
19:32
for the purposes it's intended to be
19:34
used for. This is designed at and it's
19:37
sold marketed as a cruiser bike. And so
19:39
don't buy this if you're looking for a
19:41
high-power off-road type bike. They have
19:45
bikes, Izen Wheel sells bikes that are
19:46
going to suit that kind of description
19:48
if you're looking for that. But this is
19:50
a really nice riding bike that is smooth
19:54
on the road. It has a reasonable amount
19:56
of power, a reasonable amount of range.
19:58
And I think that if you're using it as a
19:59
city or a commuter bike, it's going to
20:02
serve your purpose really well. It's
20:04
less good as a distance bike is the way
20:06
that I sometimes will use bikes like
20:07
these cuz I want to get out to locations
20:09
for photography, but I think if you're
20:11
using it even for delivery, I think that
20:14
it could work well for that. Probably my
20:16
main disappointments with this bike come
20:18
to just the fact that I think that the
20:20
specs are under oversold in some ways.
20:22
And so because of that the bike seems to
20:24
under under deliver a little bit. But I
20:26
think if you come into it with
20:27
reasonable expectations and maybe a more
20:30
reasonable use case, you're going to
20:32
find that this is a bike that really is
20:35
easy to love. It's very comfortable and
20:37
that's true on the sitting position,
20:39
handlebar position, the uprightness of
20:42
it. You know, not a lot of people are
20:43
comfortable with a you know, more
20:45
hunched forward type position. And so
20:47
people are going to find this to be a
20:48
comfortable bike to use. And I think
20:51
that it's fairly versatile for either
20:52
men or women. I'm you know, 6 ft 1 about
20:55
180 lb. It seemed to handle me just
20:57
fine. It also works fine for my 5 ft 3
21:01
wife. And so I think that this is a bike
21:03
that can serve a lot of people. If
21:04
you're going to throw one of these on
21:05
the back of your RV when you're out
21:08
traveling or if you want to use it to
21:09
commute around the city for a price of
21:12
about $899 or right under that Canadian
21:14
dollars. I think it represents a good
21:16
value for that. So taken in that sense,
21:19
I actually prefer it to a lot of the fat
21:20
tire bikes that I have used which I
21:22
think are maybe less practical for a lot
21:24
of people.
21:26
They are fun to ride, but this is a bike
21:28
I think that it would actually work for
21:29
a lot of people. I hope that this review
21:31
has helped you if you're making your own
21:33
buying decision. If you want more
21:34
information, I do have a link in the
21:36
description down below. As always,
21:38
thanks for watching. Have a great day
21:40
and let the light in.
