“Natural Abstract”

Yesterday I showed you an image that I had transformed through processing. Today I show an effect entirely produced in the camera. I have only changed the color temperature to create a more wintry feel. I made this image by using spotlight to highlight the falling snow. I focused relatively close and with a wide open aperture to create a shallow depth of field – I wanted the foreground texture to dominate and the background to be slightly dreamy. I then utilized the good stabilizer in this lens to handhold the shot with a slower shutter speed (you could also use a tripod), and allow the trail of the swirling snow to be captured. There is a sweet spot for this: to short an exposure, and you get no movement. Too long an exposure, and you just get business…or longer, the snow disappears. But here is a natural abstract that has a painterly quality…all in camera. To see yesterday’s workflow article, click here:
