7Artisans 55mm F1.4 Review + Image Gallery

Dustin Abbott

June 15th, 2020

Photography is expensive, so a lot of the gear that I end up reviewing is often outside the budget of many people.  Fortunately there has been a rise in the past 3-4 years of what I classify as “boutique third party brands”.  These are smaller startup lensmakers who don’t have a widely established reputation but often provide strong value for money.  They have been great for filling in the gaps and enabling photographers on a budget to experiment with wide aperture prime lenses.  One such company that has begun to develop a solid reputation is the Chinese lensmaker 7Artisans.  Their new 55mm F1.4 is a nice portrait option that corresponds to 82.5mm full frame equivalent on Sony or Fuji APS-C, 88mm on Canon EF-M (tested here), or 110mm with the 2x crop factor of Micro 4/3rds.  At a budget price of under $130, the 7Artisans 55mm F1.4 is a great way for photographers to experiment with a wide aperture prime lens and the beautiful images that it can create.  I’ve done this review on a Canon EOS M5 mirrorless camera.
