0:10
hi I'm Dustin Abbott and I'm here to
0:12
give you a different kind of review here
0:14
today i've been interested in
0:16
headmounted displays for a while but
0:18
Gouvis was not a brand that I had heard
0:20
of but when they reached out to me I did
0:22
a bit of research and discovered that
0:24
they are a company with a well-developed
0:26
reputation in Asia for their work in
0:28
highdefinition headmounted displays or
0:31
HMD so I thought sure I'll give it a try
0:34
and I'm starting off here using this as
0:37
my teleprompter for the moment gvis
0:39
actually holds more than 150 global
0:41
patents and you can tell in the product
0:44
that I'm reviewing today which is called
0:45
the Gouvis Art it shows every indication
0:48
of being a mature polish product now
0:51
what this is not is a VR or virtual
0:54
reality device it is a headmounted
0:56
display that allows you to watch what
0:58
looks like a very big screen basically
1:01
it looks like a 110 in screen at a 4
1:04
meter or about 13 ft distance but
1:07
obviously in a very compact and
1:09
lightweight device most importantly it
1:12
just works it's effortless it is very
1:15
effective i've allowed a bunch of people
1:16
to strap on the Govvis Art and tell me
1:18
what they think and the response all the
1:21
way up to my 85-year-old father-in-law
1:23
has been a lot of wow so is this device
1:27
something that you should be interested
1:28
in well we're going to dive in and after
1:30
I've used it now for close to a month
1:33
I'll let you know what I think works
1:35
really well what needs a bit of polish
1:37
and whether or not this should be
1:39
something that you should check out
1:41
let's dive in let's take a look so
1:43
before we jump in in full disclosure
1:45
Guis did send me the Art for testing as
1:49
always this is a completely independent
1:51
review they have had no input on my
1:53
findings and they will not be seeing
1:54
this video before you see it so let's
1:57
talk about some of the design elements
1:59
here and the specifications that uh go
2:02
into what they call the art this is a
2:06
very simple design that leverages USBC's
2:09
ability to transmit a video signal and
2:12
particularly when you're using an output
2:14
device like a lot of Android phones and
2:16
then also the more recent uh iOS devices
2:19
starting with iPhone 15 they also have
2:22
the ability to transmit a video signal
2:24
via USBC and so if you have a device
2:27
that outputs via USBC it's a really
2:30
really simple process it is the very
2:32
definition of plugand play once you plug
2:34
one end into the art and the other end
2:37
to your playback device for example my
2:39
iPhone 15 immediately the device will
2:42
power up and it will be start to show a
2:45
screen mirroring of what's going on in
2:47
your phone then when you go to actual
2:49
video content and you start to play back
2:51
it treats this as as if you were casting
2:53
to a TV for example and so it you know
2:56
it's not going to have all the onscreen
2:58
information there all the time and so
3:00
that that doesn't interfere with your
3:01
playback ability now to be clear the Arc
3:04
does not have any kind of built-in power
3:06
source of it of its own so it is going
3:09
to be running off of power coming from
3:12
your playback device now I couldn't find
3:14
an actual specification on what the
3:17
power usage actually is i didn't notice
3:20
anything significant but there is no
3:22
question that your battery is going to
3:23
drain faster and of course if you're on
3:26
a long flight for example and you're
3:27
tying up your charge port with this
3:29
cable for video you might want to have a
3:32
a Qi like wireless charger and so that
3:35
you can keep everything topped up during
3:37
the course of your flight or your
3:39
commute whatever the case may be now
3:41
there is a USBC to HDMI adapter that is
3:45
available for devices that have an HDMI
3:47
output but don't have a USBC for video
3:51
type output if you have an older phone
3:54
you may be stuck using something else
3:57
and so they do have a package which what
4:02
this is not only a streaming device that
4:05
is basically running Google TV iOS or
4:08
operating system not iOS but operating
4:10
system but it also has an 8000 mAh power
4:13
bank built into it so that way you have
4:15
about 6 hours of playback via this and
4:19
so that means on a flight for example if
4:21
by using a package like this you could
4:23
watch about three 2hour movies before
4:26
the power of this ran out and in this
4:29
case you actually do have the ability to
4:31
charge at the same time because the
4:33
unfortunate thing here is you're
4:35
actually having to leverage an HDMI
4:37
output so you've got to use this adapter
4:39
and then plug your USBC cable into the
4:42
back of this so that's unfortunate it
4:45
does add an extra piece in here and a
4:46
little bit of clunk to that the upside
4:49
is that you can also use this device uh
4:51
for outputting to any kind of HDMI so if
4:55
you have a non-s smart TV for example a
4:57
projector anything like that you could
4:59
output and have a Google iOS including a
5:03
nice standard Google TV remote which can
5:06
be very useful because it's familiar
5:07
button layout and I actually found even
5:10
in playback I did enjoy having the
5:12
remote just for quick you know play
5:14
pause that type thing i found that to be
5:16
extremely useful so that's how you get
5:18
content to the actual device so let's
5:21
talk a little bit more about the device
5:22
itself first of all I really appreciated
5:24
the fact that you have a wide range of
5:26
adjustments and so that you can make
5:28
sure that you get the optima optimal not
5:31
only situation of the device but also
5:33
the optimal sharpness or clarity of the
5:36
device for your use so first of all you
5:38
have the ability to adjust left right
5:40
and so everyone has you know a little
5:42
bit different pupil distance and
5:44
distance between uh their eyes and so
5:46
you can you have a range all the way
5:48
from 58 mm up to 74 mm which is you know
5:52
quite a significant range of adjustment
5:54
to make sure that you can get both of
5:55
those screens lined up perfectly in
5:57
front of your pupils and so that you're
5:59
getting the maximum viewing area and
6:02
they're lining up the uh the most
6:04
properly you also have a diopter control
6:07
on either side and so you can
6:09
independently uh adjust the diopter for
6:12
both screens and thus for both eyes and
6:15
so you can the range is from 0 to minus
6:17
3.5 now if your vision requires if
6:20
you're more myopic than that and you
6:22
require a greater adjustment of vision
6:24
you can wear this the design allows you
6:26
to continue to wear your glasses while
6:28
doing this and so in that case obviously
6:30
you're going to back off any kind of
6:32
diopter adjustment because your glasses
6:34
are going to be doing the heavy lifting
6:36
of um correcting your vision it is 3D
6:39
capable and there is a button that
6:41
allows you to switch between 2D and 3D
6:43
it is a side byside 3D content i did a
6:47
little bit of research trying to find 3D
6:49
content does exist out there but
6:51
obviously the age of peak popularity for
6:55
3D has passed and I do find that it can
6:58
be difficult to get streaming uh content
7:02
that is sidebyside 3D u particularly if
7:04
you're looking for like fulllength
7:06
movies uh I did watch some video clips
7:08
and I found that the effect uh works
7:10
well it's it's very interesting to look
7:12
at however getting a lot of content for
7:15
that may prove to be difficult and so
7:18
that would be the downside there and so
7:19
you you have the ability to click
7:21
between 2D and 3D and also you have the
7:23
ability to swap eyes and so depending on
7:26
the content and how it was created to
7:28
make sure that you have the broadest
7:29
range of playback options for that 3D
7:32
content on the right side you also have
7:34
controls for the brightness and on that
7:35
note I found that u under almost all
7:38
conditions I didn't need to go any
7:39
brighter than about the 50% mark so
7:42
there's a broad range of brightness
7:44
there uh for a lot of different lighting
7:46
conditions and so that was great as well
7:48
on the other side you have first of all
7:50
the lock that will allow you to either
7:52
expand or diminish the distance to make
7:54
sure you're lining up properly for your
7:56
eyes and then there is also a volume
7:58
control now there are small speakers
8:01
that are built into the uh the part that
8:04
goes on your forehead i will note on
8:07
that there you know that the sound is
8:08
not going to be particularly full range
8:10
particularly on the low end uh it's not
8:12
bad it's certainly usable in a pinch but
8:15
I would recommend getting your audio
8:16
from other ways and so up here on the
8:19
headband portion uh on the right side is
8:21
where you plug in the USBC on the left
8:23
side there is a 3.5 mm headphone output
8:27
so if you want to use wired headphones
8:29
you can use it uh by just inserting that
8:31
into there and then you're going to
8:32
control the volume from the control on
8:35
the actual art itself now if you use
8:37
Bluetooth buds uh which I that's what
8:39
I've most commonly done because then
8:41
you're eliminating one more one less
8:43
wire out of the equation uh you're
8:46
obviously going to control your volume
8:47
independently for your Bluetooth buds
8:49
the nice thing about using the Bluetooth
8:51
bud option however you know if you're
8:53
just using it from this type of device
8:55
and you don't have the remote is that
8:57
very often if you just you know click or
8:59
you squeeze for play pause it will pause
9:02
your content and so that's nice as well
9:04
and obviously you're going to control
9:06
your uh your volume independently from
9:09
your playback device in this case for me
9:11
most of the time it was a phone now as
9:14
you look into each one of these going to
9:16
the video side of things each screen has
9:19
a native uh 1920x 1080 uh uh resolution
9:24
they are micro OLED displays in each one
9:28
but uh more important and you might say
9:30
oh well full HD that doesn't sound
9:31
particularly sharp to me but the the
9:35
amount of pixels per inch that are
9:37
squeezed into this display are actually
9:39
really really impressive it has 4,496
9:43
pixels per inch let's just to give you a
9:46
point of comparison the Apple Vision Pro
9:51
pupils per inch and so that means you
9:53
have over,00 pupil or pixels more per
9:57
inch in this Govvis Art than what you do
10:00
in the Apple Pro or Vision Pro which
10:02
tells you it is extremely extremely
10:04
crisp more importantly for those of you
10:07
that are gamers is the lag time which is
10:09
under 10 milliseconds so I mean under 40
10:12
is considered good professional gamers
10:14
want under 15 and so this tells you that
10:17
even professional gamers they're going
10:19
to be happy with the lag time associated
10:21
with this and so if you're looking for a
10:22
display that's not only going to give
10:24
you a big screen but also give you
10:25
really quick reaction times another uh
10:28
key benefit there the picture quality is
10:31
extremely good uh contra contrast ratio
10:34
is 100,000 to1 you know contrast ratios
10:37
I don't know how much those can
10:38
necessarily be trusted all the time but
10:40
I can tell you the black levels look
10:42
great um obviously you have a great deal
10:45
of uh of brightness there and so as a
10:48
byproduct you can look at you know HDR
10:51
content it looks fantastic on there now
10:54
the design is the idea of it being more
10:58
of an open vision concept it has uh
11:02
upsides and downsides now the upside is
11:04
is that I can still make eye contact
11:06
with the camera right now in a several
11:08
ways while wearing the display and so
11:10
for example as I've been you know
11:12
wearing this and kind of evaluating it
11:15
my wife comes in the room she wants to
11:16
talk to me i can actually see her i can
11:18
make eye contact with her and I've taken
11:20
this kind of privilege to the extreme i
11:23
I've even worn these while working out
11:26
and uh you know for example if I'm
11:28
dropping back as you can see here to to
11:30
do reps for chest to be able to go back
11:33
on my back and still have the screen
11:36
always in front of my eyes is actually
11:37
really cool but I have enough of
11:39
peripheral vision that I can see fine to
11:41
do whatever exercise I'm doing while
11:43
still being able to focus on the video
11:45
content that I have in the display so it
11:49
does eliminate in certain lighting
11:51
conditions it would uh disrupt the
11:54
immersiveness a bit obviously you do
11:56
have some peripheral light and I noticed
11:58
every now and then a little bit of light
12:00
leaking depending on the light source
12:01
around but it obviously has other
12:04
advantages that and so obviously because
12:06
there is you know light can leak in from
12:09
the sides even though it holds up really
12:11
well actually found in a wide variety of
12:13
brighting or lighting conditions
12:17
you're going to get your best
12:19
performance in a dimly mit lit or dark
12:21
room for obvious reasons now you know
12:25
they they do have other you know closed
12:27
designs available and so if you're
12:29
looking for complete immersiveness maybe
12:31
that's going to be one of those options
12:33
is going to be better for you but for a
12:35
lot of people to be able to keep a
12:36
little bit of situational awareness even
12:38
on a commute for example could actually
12:40
be very useful and I've actually found I
12:43
I was unsure about this design myself
12:45
i've actually found that I really don't
12:48
mind it and I appreciate some of the
12:50
flexibility that having a little bit of
12:52
situational awareness does allow me now
12:55
GVIS lists the Arts weight at 110 gram i
12:59
find that's maybe a little deceptive uh
13:01
you know so you can get to 110 g if you
13:04
don't have you know for example this
13:07
forehead you know kind of padded
13:09
forehead rest which clips into the
13:11
inside of this it makes a night and day
13:14
difference as to how comfortable it is
13:16
to wear so you're going to want to have
13:18
that on and obviously you're not going
13:19
to be able to use it without the USBC
13:22
cable attached so when I put all of
13:24
those elements together and I put it on
13:25
my own personal scale I came back with
13:28
277 g you know at 277 g is still
13:32
extremely lightweight and because the
13:34
weight is nicely distributed and I found
13:36
that this um the padding that goes on
13:38
the forehead makes it very comfortable I
13:41
was able to you know use extended
13:43
viewing sessions and I I found it
13:45
completely comfortable i never really
13:46
noticed the weight of it at all and so
13:49
that was great now if you you know are
13:51
someone that wants even even more
13:54
comfortable decision or experience you
13:57
do have the option of adding on this
13:59
which goes to the back of the head and
14:01
clips all in together and so that the
14:02
weight is now distributed between two
14:04
padded sections and you have an ability
14:07
to tighten or loosen that here and so
14:09
what that's going to allow you to do is
14:10
to you know control the overall tension
14:13
i did not find this necessary and to me
14:16
it just adds it basically doubles the
14:18
amount of bulk involved and so that
14:20
accessory is not for me your mileage may
14:23
vary obviously I do appreciate on the
14:26
bulk uh front that when everything is
14:28
you know quickly folded down here that
14:31
you can throw it into this uh pouch that
14:34
it comes with and it's it's a fairly
14:37
small footprint for what it is and you
14:39
know it's relatively flat you could
14:41
easily throw that into your you know
14:43
your backpack or your carry-on whatever
14:45
whatever it is that you are you know
14:47
tracking on there and I found like I
14:50
always keep there's a cleaning cloth
14:52
that comes with it i've got that in this
14:53
front pouch and I also threw a set of
14:55
wired buds in there just in case I'm
14:57
ever out with it and I don't happen to
14:59
have Bluetooth buds with me i've got
15:02
that option right there so let's talk
15:05
about some things that I like just after
15:07
having used it for a while it is really
15:10
kind of ridiculously easy to use with
15:12
the caveat that you have a modern device
15:14
that supports video over USBC so for me
15:19
I I thought I was going to have to go
15:21
through steps i had plugged it in and I
15:24
was shocked when I immediately the
15:26
display mirroring my phone came up like
15:28
there it was literally plugandplay for
15:30
me now obviously your mileage may vary
15:32
and on their website they do have a list
15:34
of all the devices where it's you're
15:37
going to have that just plugandplay
15:39
supported already without any kind of
15:41
additional steps and so that might be
15:42
worth checking out if you have an older
15:44
device though if you if you're using an
15:46
Android based device it the flexibility
15:49
goes back a little deeper than what it
15:51
was with Applebased devices i also love
15:54
the fact that I I felt like it had
15:55
fantastic clarity the picture quality is
15:58
truly exceptional and it's a very
16:00
engaging visual experience and so I'll
16:02
add to that I was impressed with the the
16:05
black levels black levels are great
16:08
they're they're nice and dark but with
16:10
clarity and detail in them so I thought
16:12
they were really fantastic i will note
16:14
on that you don't really actually have a
16:15
lot of picture control any picture
16:18
control really outside of brightness and
16:20
so it's fortunate that it all looks
16:21
really good because you don't have any
16:23
control in the actual playback device
16:25
when it comes to that i also found it to
16:28
be extremely comfortable i had no issues
16:30
with wearing it for longer periods of
16:32
time and certainly everyone that you
16:34
know that put it on and tried it out uh
16:37
I heard no complaints over any kind of
16:39
discomfort over that either i found that
16:42
it was actually a benefit that I was
16:43
able to see around it and so it expanded
16:46
the range of what I could do while
16:48
wearing it and so you know on a very
16:51
personal and practical level you know
16:53
you could be watching something need to
16:54
go to the bathroom you don't need to
16:56
take it all off and set it back up i
16:58
mean you could still see to go to the
17:00
bathroom no problem while continuing to
17:01
wear the device so you know that has
17:04
some practical benefits to it i find
17:07
that it is a if you're if you're wanting
17:09
a big screen experience but you don't
17:11
have a big screen budget this is a way
17:14
to achieve that it cost for the basic
17:17
package it cost about $470
17:20
under $500 you know that as compared to
17:23
trying to buy a truly large screen or a
17:26
projector that could project a large
17:27
screen uh that offers a very good value
17:30
and you have to go into a pretty
17:31
high-end projector to match what you're
17:33
getting here in terms of visual
17:35
immersiveness i also appreciate the fact
17:37
that it has extremely low lag and so for
17:40
those that want to use it for gaming uh
17:42
it's going to satisfy everybody when it
17:44
comes to that i also appreciate the fact
17:46
that it is this very small footprint and
17:48
the advantage over the more closed
17:50
designs is that this truly is small and
17:53
light relative to those which can get
17:55
really quite bulky so how about some
17:57
things that I didn't like well the
18:00
downside obviously of being a little bit
18:02
more open around the edges that in
18:04
certain situations I did sometimes get a
18:06
little bit of a light leak and so if
18:08
there was light that was pointed at me I
18:10
could get a little bit of glare in the
18:11
corners sometime and I had to either
18:13
turn my head or maybe make a minor
18:15
adjustment and so that light source was
18:19
second thing that's worth considering is
18:21
that running off your phone's battery as
18:23
opposed to having an independent power
18:25
source is that it could be an issue if
18:27
your phone is nearly dead obviously
18:30
that's going to be a factor but of
18:31
course the flip side of that is you
18:33
never have to worry about the state of
18:34
charge for the art itself it has no
18:37
state of charge and so leaves you having
18:39
to worry about just one thing which for
18:41
many people is half the headache it is
18:45
not as fully immersive as a closed
18:48
design and so if your you know optimal
18:50
goal is you know being completely lost
18:52
and everything you may want something
18:54
that has a closed design without any
18:56
peripheral awareness around it i also
18:59
found as a negative that using the D if
19:01
you need to use the D4H1 having to use
19:04
that HDMI adapter I consider that to be
19:06
a negative now I don't I want it to have
19:08
the HDMI output because that broadens
19:10
the flexibility of what it has and by
19:13
the way this does also have 16 gig of
19:15
internal storage and a a micro HD you
19:19
know a micro SD slot here and so you can
19:22
expand it even more if you want to bring
19:24
along your own content say if you're on
19:26
a flight where you don't have any kind
19:28
of Wi-Fi so I wanted to have the HDMI
19:30
but I also wanted to have a USBC output
19:33
if you're going to package this with
19:35
your you know your headmounted displays
19:37
that use USBC as their video source put
19:42
a vid a USBC port on this and so we can
19:45
use it without any kind of clunky
19:46
adapter i want both output ports not
19:49
just the one HDMI so a few complaints
19:53
there but my conclusion is is that this
19:55
was a lot of fun to use doesn't
19:58
perfectly solve every technical detail
20:00
as we've just talked about but if you're
20:02
using a newer iPhone or Android it is
20:05
dead simple to just plug and play and
20:08
literally you can sit down and you can
20:09
be in your content within seconds not
20:12
minutes the screen looks big and clear
20:15
it has very low distortion under 1%
20:18
distortion and so you can see right to
20:20
the very corners of things and you might
20:22
be surprised at how much you see on the
20:24
edges of the frames of video content
20:26
you've never seen before the form factor
20:29
makes it very portable and easy to bring
20:31
along this is a pretty compelling
20:33
package and if you've got $500 burning a
20:36
hole in your pocket and you've been
20:38
looking for a headmounted display the
20:41
idea of having your own personal cinema
20:43
appeals to you then the Gvis Art may
20:46
just be the device for you even if it
20:48
does have kind of a funky name i'm
