I thought last year’s XGIMI Horizon 20 Pro model that I reviewed set the bar for amazing, but XGIMI has taken it to new levels with their new TITAN Noir Max flagship home theater projector. XGIMI’s TITAN Noir Series marks a bold step into true reference-grade home theater projection. Available in three tiers—standard TITAN Noir, TITAN Noir Pro, and the top-tier TITAN Noir Max—the lineup is built for dedicated cinema rooms rather than all-in-one smart entertainment. I tested the MAX configuration, and was simply blown away by not only the quality of the picture but also the utter smoothness of the footage. Priced at $5,999, it’s a premium investment, but for enthusiasts chasing theater-like blacks, color accuracy, and optical precision, it delivers in spades. You can put down a deposit on a preorder and save up to $3200! Watching the video review linked below is the best way to see this projector in action, or read on in this article for a summary of my findings.

Design, Build, and the “No Smart” Philosophy
The TITAN Noir Max sports a sleek silver-grey chassis with a striking gold IMAX Enhanced logo (the Pro and standard models get silver).

It measures roughly the size of a premium AV receiver but weighs a solid 8.1 kg (17.8 lb), feeling substantial and well-engineered. A premium carrying case is included with the Max—handy for those who might move it between rooms or setups.

What sets the Noir series apart is its deliberate lack of a built-in smart OS. XGIMI opted for AOSP (Android Open Source Project) at the kernel level for deeper hardware optimization and customization. You’ll need to pair it with an external streamer or media player, so expect two remotes in most setups. The backlit remote is sleek and stylish, though I would like a little more robust backlighting, and the 24W Harman Kardon audio system (2×12W with DTS Virtual:X) delivers surprisingly rich, room-filling sound for a projector—though serious users will pair it with a dedicated AV receiver via eARC or optical.
Ports are comprehensive: 3× HDMI (one with eARC), USB 2.0 and 3.0, Gigabit LAN, optical out, 3.5 mm audio, and DC power. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 round out connectivity.
It has a massive range of optical adjustments (more on that in a moment), so it comes without the gimbal that the Horizon 20 did. I still like using the option floor stand, however, as it gets the projector up and helps hide the power cord.

Core Technology: Dual Intelligent Iris and SST DMD
The headline feature is XGIMI’s Dual Intelligent Iris System—two separate irises working in tandem for unprecedented black-level performance. Iris 1 sits in the imaging path, directly controlling contrast and shadow depth. Iris 2 handles the illumination path, managing overall light flux and brightness.

You get two control modes:
- 5-step manual adjustment (f/2.0 to f/7.0) for home-theater purists and calibration pros—hitting a native contrast of 10,000:1 at f/7.0. That’s huge, when the Horizon 20 Max only achieved a 1500:1 native contrast!
- Dynamic mode that continuously analyzes scene content in real time (no digital dimming or post-processing) and physically adjusts the irises for optimal contrast.
Paired with XGIMI’s self-developed X-Vision chip and Dynamic Black Level Enhancement (DBLE), the system reaches up to 100,000:1 dynamic contrast, but far more important is that new record setting native contrast. The result? Deeper blacks that stay noise-free, richer shadow detail, smoother light-dark transitions, and no crushed blacks. In moderate-to-dim rooms, the blacks are impressively clean and film-like.

Powering the image is Texas Instruments’ next-gen 0.47″ SST DMD chip. Compared to conventional TRP chips, SST offers higher power tolerance, better thermal flow, a wider ±14.5° micromirror tilt for stronger native contrast, and rock-solid stability during long viewing sessions. Brightness is rated at 7,000 ISO lumens peak (5,000 ISO recommended for movie watching in Standard Mode + Brightness Boost with low fan noise and ΔE < 10). Even at high contrast, it maintains 2,000 ISO DarkField luminance so shadows stay detailed without sacrificing highlights.
Optics That Photographers (and Cinephiles) Will Love
The X-Master Red Ring Lens Pro (exclusive to the Max) is a 15-element, ultra-high-resolution optical system with 99.6% light transmittance, 14-layer vacuum coating, and aspherical glass to suppress spherical aberration. Edge-to-edge sharpness is exceptional.

Flexibility is off the charts:
- Throw ratio: 0.98–2.0:1 (120″ screen from 2.66–5.31 m / 8.7–17.4 ft)
- Lens shift: Horizontal ±50%, Vertical ±130% (with lens memory for up to 5 positions—perfect for switching between 16:9 and 2.35:1 CinemaScope)
- Image size: 65–300″
- Optical zoom, focus, and keystone (auto keystone is shockingly accurate)
As a photographer, I appreciate how these pure optical adjustments preserve image integrity far better than electronic corrections on most projectors. I was shocked at how much bigger the actual lens is in the Titan Noir as compared to last year’s Horizon 20.

Picture Quality: Natural, Cinematic, and Uncompromising
In real-world viewing, the TITAN Noir Max delivers the most natural, film-like image I’ve experienced from a projector. Colors are accurate out of the box (ΔE < 0.8 across BT.2020, DCI-P3, Rec.709, Adobe RGB; 110% BT.2020 coverage) thanks to the RGB Triple Laser light source and advanced processing.

IMAX Enhanced, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Filmmaker Mode are all supported, along with 24 fps native playback and active-shutter 3D. The picture not only looks fantastic, but the whole viewing experience is smooth. There is no judder in the movement, no local-dimming “blooming” as lighting changes, and the entire experience is completely cinematic.

Black levels shine in dim-to-moderate lighting—shadow detail is layered and dimensional, with no obvious blooming. High-contrast scenes (city nights, volcanic landscapes) show excellent structure and gradation. In brighter rooms the picture remains punchy, though it won’t quite match a high-end TV for daylight viewing. Side-angle performance is strong, and the advanced Anti-RBE (Rainbow Effect) technology is highly effective—minimal eye strain even during long sessions. I couldn’t see any picture deterioration even when viewing directly from the side.

Motion is buttery smooth, and the projector handles 24 fps director-intended playback flawlessly. No artificial sharpening or processing—just pure, balanced cinema.
3D seems to be an abandoned technology (content is hard to find and doesn’t seem to have transitioned much to streaming services), but if you have the content, the viewing experience using XGIMI’s active shutter glasses is pretty incredible.

I’ve never quite understood why this very cool technology lost its charm. Maybe people don’t like looking I do in the photo above?
Gaming Performance: Serious Credentials
The TITAN Noir shares the Horizon 20’s excellent gaming specs when it comes to input lag.
- 1 ms input lag at 1080p/240 Hz
- 2.2 ms at 1080p/120 Hz
- 3 ms at 4K/60 Hz
- VRR, ALLM, and 240 Hz support

One additional advantage here is that the Gigabit LAN ensures stable low-latency connections. All of the picture observations above hold true for gamers as well, and you’ll see more detail in your games than you ever realized were there before.
Pros and Cons

Final Verdict
The XGIMI TITAN Noir MAX is, quite simply, the best projector I have ever tested. It combines reference-level black performance via its Dual Intelligent Iris System, brilliant RGB Triple Laser color and brightness, and class-leading optical flexibility into one cohesive, silent package. While the $5,999 price tag positions it firmly in flagship territory (though putting a deposit down and taking advantage of preorder discounts halves that amount), the performance justifies it for anyone building a serious home theater. Pair it with a good screen, solid audio system, and a light-controlled room, and you’ll have a setup capable of 300″ images that rival (and in many ways surpass) commercial cinemas. My reference screen is 120″, and the TITAN Noir MAX laughs at a screen that size.
If you’re a cinephile or serious AV enthusiast who values purity over convenience features, the TITAN Noir Max is the heart your theater deserves. I absolutely recommend it for those who want the best.
