Sirui Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x Anamorphic Cine Lens Review

While I recently reviewed a new series of autofocusing photography lenses from Sirui, their true specialty has been in the production of cine lenses. While I’m more of a photography first person, I have reviewed a number of cine lenses over the years. But Sirui has specialized not only in cine lenses, but particularly in anamorphic style cine lenses, and my time spent with the Sirui Saturn 35mm T2.9 1.6x is my first experience with an anamorphic lens.
Anamorphic lenses are by their very nature not your typical “run and gun” video footage kind of lens. What is displayed on your camera screen (I reviewed the lens in Sony E-mount) looks bunched together an distorted, as will the video footage until it is “de-squeezed” in editing software. But what is left afterwards is that kind of wide perspective footage that looks extremely cinematic.
Both Craig and I loved the footage we were able to capture with the lens, and we break down the pros and cons along with a lot of footage in the video review here. Enjoy!

Thanks to Sirui for sending me a review loaner of this lens. As always, this is a completely independent review. *The tests and most of the photos that I share as a part of my review cycle have been done with the Sony a7RV along with the Sony Alpha 1 that serve as my benchmark cameras for Sony lenses.
