Viltrox AF 23mm F1.4 Review

Dustin Abbott

August 24th, 2020

Viltrox has quickly established a name for themselves because, unlike most other new boutique lens makers, they have quickly (and successfully) accepted the challenge of designing autofocus lenses rather than just manual focus options.  Many other newer brands have not yet taken that plunge, but Viltrox has shown a rapid maturation in their autofocus lenses, with increasingly competent, smooth, and quick autofocus results.  That’s never been more obvious than on the new Viltrox AF 23mm F1.4 that I’m reviewing here (available on Sony E-mount and Fuji X-mount), as it delivers quick autofocus and solid image quality results.  This 23mm F1.4 joins the recent 33mm F1.4 (my review here)  as competent yet compact APS-C prime lenses roughly covering the 35mm and 50mm angle of view.  The 23mm F1.4 on Sony or Fuji’s 1.5x crop factor has a 34.5mm full frame equivalent angle of view, while the 33mm has a 49.5mm angle of view.

The Viltrox lenses have proven particularly popular on the Fuji platform where there is little third party development, but I suspect a lens like this will also be popular on Sony E-mount.  It’s a great focal length, and image quality is quite good for the relatively low price of around $300 USD.  My review breaks down in detail whether or not you should consider the Viltrox 23mm F1.4 for your own kit.
